Wassamassau

The Wassamassaw Tribe, colloquially known as the "Varnertown Indians" is a small tribe of Native Americans that persisted from the Colonial Era, and in 2005 was finally granted full tribal recognition by the State of South Carolina. The tribe is headquartered in Berkeley County, South Carolina.

The tribe is one of five that have been recently recognized by South Carolina, including the Waccamaw, the Chaloklowa Chickasaws, the Pee Dees, and a composite group known as "The Eastern Cherokee, Southern Iroquois, and United Tribes." The Catawba tribe is the only one in South Carolina recognized by the U.S. Government.
