Washington and Sunderland West will be a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It will elect one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, the Boundary Commission for England has created this new constituency. It is composed of elements of the following former constituencies: Houghton and Washington East; Gateshead East and Washington West; Sunderland North; and Sunderland South.

The new seat of Washington and Sunderland West is made up of the following electoral wards:
- Castle, Redhill, St Anne’s, Washington Central, Washington East, Washington North, Washington South, Washington West

This seat will be fought for the first time at the UK general election of 2009 or 2010.
Media coverage in the region indicates that the Labour nomination will be keenly contested[1].
Following a ballot of members on 8th September 2007 Sharon Hodgson MP was selected as the Labour candidate, currently she repsents 38% of the new seat which comes from her existing seat of Gateshead East and Washington West which is being abolished at the next election.
