[edit] History
When the current State Route system came into effect in 1964, SR 536 was designated as the route from the Anacortes Ferry Terminal (to the San Juan Islands) to Mt. Vernon at I-5. In 1972, SR 20 was completed through the north Cascade range and SR 536 was truncated to its current route.
Prior to 1964, SR 536 had been part of the Anacortes Branch of PSH-1. Since 1983, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has grown tulips near SR 536. Occasionally, daffodils will also grow with the tulips.
