[edit] Route description
SR 531 begins at Wenberg State Park (off the shores of Lake Goodwin) and continues north along East Lake Goodwin Road until it intersects with Lakewood Road. From the intersection, SR 531 goes roughly east along Lakewood Road around Lake Ki and through a small forest until reaching a small reservoir, where Lakewood Road becomes the mostly straight 172nd Street NW. East of the switch, 45 Road branches off to the southeast and serves as an alternative to the SR 531–Interstate 5 interchange and 172nd Street NW becomes 172nd Street NE. After continuing east, SR 531 reaches 11th Avenue.
11th Avenue connects to the main entrances of Lakewood High School, the only high school for North Lakewood, and Cougar Creek Elementary, the only traditional Kindergarten to Grade 5 school for North Lakewood. SR 531 goes east next to Lakewood Elementary and the Lakewood School District heardquarters, and finally continues across the railroad tracks towards Smokey Point. SR 531 intersects with 27th Avenue, which connects with Lakewood Crossing. Just a small way east, SR 531 has an interchange with Interstate 5.
After leaving the interchange and North Lakewood, SR 531 goes east to Smokey Point Boulevard (former US 99) in Smokey Point. The road then keeps east, passing Weston High School and Arlington Municipal Airport before intersecting with 67th Avenue, a major road from Marysville's Sunnyside area to Arlington. The road then curves slightly and eventually terminates at SR 9.
The road continuies east for 1,078 feet (329 m)[3] as 172nd Street NE evenutally ending at 91st Street. This section is not part of the route, but connects the route to small housing areas.[4]
SR 531 has various names at different points along the route. These include East Lake Goodwin Road from the western end at Wenberg State Park to the intersection with Lakewood Road, Lakewood Road from the intersection with East Lake Goodwin Road to the intersection with 45 Road, 172nd Street NW from the intersection with 45 Road to just east of the 100 Block NW, and 172nd Street NE from just west of 100 Block NE to junction with SR 9.[1][5][6][7]
[edit] History
SR 531 became a state highway on April 1, 1992.[8] At the time, very few travelers used the road. Later on, however, the two-lane road needed to be widened after a large economic boom occurred in the area. In the later half of the 1990's, the stretch from I-5 east to just west of 43rd Avenue NE was widened from two to five lanes. Also, stop signs were replaced with traffic lights at the intersection with Smokey Point Boulevard. Traffic lights were also installed since then at the intersection with 67th Avenue NE.
In 2006, WSDOT announced it would do three more projects to improve SR 531 that would span about 5 years total. The first was immediately started and improved the bridge and interchange between I-5 and SR 531.[9] It was partially completed in June of 2006, and the project will be completed fully after the loop ramp is added in 2011. In spring of 2007, WSDOT started on its sidewalk improvement project. This was a relatively small project that helped make the sidewalks in North Lakewood safer for children to walk on throughout the Lakewood School District, which lies south of SR 531. The project lasted until August 2007.[10] The final project is expected to be the addition of the loop ramp to the interchange with Interstate 5. It will start in 2009 and end in 2011.[11]
Recent commercial activity at Lakewood Crossing, additional road improvements are expected to help with traffic surrounding the area west of Interstate 5. This may mean the addition of numerous new lanes and traffic signals. It is also expected that SR 531 will be widened between 43rd Avenue NE and 67th Avenue NE from its current two lanes to four (or five).
