Washington Outer Beltway
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Washington Outer Beltway is a past proposed freeway that would have encircled Washington, D.C. through the states of Maryland and Virginia. While much of the route was canceled in the 1980s, the Fairfax County Parkway in Virginia was completed between 1987 and 2001 and the Intercounty Connector in Maryland is scheduled to be completed between 2010 and 2011. Both of these routes were considered part of the proposed routing of the Outer Beltway. Other sections of the Beltway, including the Western Transportation Corridor and the Techway, remain active proposals today.[citation needed] Due to the history of these proposals they are often referred to as "Outer Beltway projects". Proposals to build a complete outer beltway have been repeatedly blocked by local jurisdictions who object to additional Potomac River bridge crossings, as well as to violation of protected "open space".
