Washington Is Next! is the second track on the 2007 Megadeth album, United Abominations. This song is featured on the United Abominations E-Card, which was launched on April 23, 2007 from Roadrunner Records. [1]
Although it was said by Dave Mustaine himself that the song is going to be the next single after À Tout le Monde (Set Me Free), eventually it didn't make it and was replaced by Never Walk Alone... A Call to Arms as the next single.
The song tells a story about biological war, after which a new world order rises to enslave people.
There are two Latin phrases in the song that translate as follows:
"Novus Ordo Seclorum" was the motto suggested in 1782 by Charles Thomson, the Founding Father chosen by the Continental Congress to come up with the final design for the Great Seal of the United States.
Translating Novus Ordo Seclorum
- Novus means: new, young, novel.
- Ordo means: row, series, order.
- Seclorum means: of the ages, of the generations, of the centuries.
An accurate translation of Novus Ordo Seclorum is "A New Order of the Ages," but the meaning of this motto is better understood when seen in its original context.
Translating Annuit Cœptis
Taken from the Latin words annuo (to nod, approve) and cœpio (to begin, undertake), it literally means someone or something "approves" the things having been begun.

There is occasional discussion over this song having prophetic values. It speaks about Joseph in the bible (Genesis 41:1-37) interpreting the dreams of the pharaoh. (there was a king/an evil king/who dreamt the wickedest of dreams/an ancient mystery/no prophet could interpret/of seven years of famine/the wolf is at my door/as predicted years ago/that that was that is that is no more/the word predicts the future/and tells the truth about the past/of how world leaders will hail the new pharaoh/the eighth false king to the throne/washington is next)
"The Word" is God, as stated in John 1:1-2.
In the August 2007 issue of Guitar World Magazine, Dave Mustaine confirmed that the lyrics in this song refer to both an event in the Bible and a time in recent history.
In the January 2008 edition of the official Megadeth podcast, Dave Mustaine had this to say when asked about the song's meaning:
"Washington Is Next!" is about two different concepts. One is about world power, and the other one is about a guy who can interpret dreams, and for me I look at it like this: Since the beginning of time, man has tried to dominate mankind. There's been, you know, Babylon, Greece, Persia, the Anglo-Saxon world power, Rome. There's been so many world powers and they all fall, there's always gonna be a successor. So who's next after Washington, you know? The U.N. is supposed to be a figurehead as being a world power right now, and right now, to me, it looks absolutely frozen in time. And I think that there's a lot of people—they just don't really know what's going on. And there's a lot of indicators, what's happening politically—anybody who's got their finger on the pulse with world politics or world history could pretty much look at what's happening right now and say 'This is a barometer of what's to come.' And if you want to go to spiritual things you can go to the book of Nostradamus, you can read the Bible, you can look in other things and try and determine what the hieroglyphs mean, you know, but if you just go by your gut right now, the world is in a very, very tense state right now.
