In 1988, one of the inaugural franchises in the third incarnation of the American Soccer League was named the Washington Diplomats. For the 1990 season, this league merged with the Western Soccer Alliance to form the American Professional Soccer League, which eventually became the USL First Division. This version of the Diplomats folded after the 1991 season.
