[edit] History
[edit] Formation
Washington Christian Academy was formed when local families from Presbyterian and Christian Reformed churches in the area felt the need for a strong, biblically based and diverse school in the Washington, DC area. For the time, the school defied cultural values and created a school that specifically named diversity as one of its top qualities.[1] The school was formed as Washington Christian School in 1960 for grades K-4. WCS stayed small until 1996 when it merged with the nearby Silver Spring Christian Academy (a school for grades 9-12), forming Washington Christian Academy (Pre K-12). They continued to grow and were housed at that time in a public school building on Franwall Avenue in Wheaton, Maryland.
[edit] Building Changes
Seeing that the county would soon need the rented building back from the small school, Washington Christian Academy institued a long-term plan to have a fully-functioning campus in Olney, MD for 1,100 students.[2] Beginning that plan was the immediate move out of their location of 20 years [3] and into two interum campuses, Global Mission Church and Colesville Baptist Church. When the school moves out of these temporary locations and into their own building, they will have spent a total of three years in their short-term schools, coming to a final rest into WCA's first real building that it can call its own. [4]
[edit] New Building
Since April 2007, Washington Christian Academy has been in the process of constructing a new facility in Olney, Maryland. This new building will increase the space available drastically and increases opportunities for the school to expand. While it is in a beautiful, seemingly remote location on the outside of Olney, it is a short three mile drive to the heart of the area, and right next to Georgia Ave. and the future Intercounty Connector. The building is scheduled to complete sometime in the summer of 2008. [5]
