Warwick Economics Summit

The Warwick Economics Summit is an annual two and a half day event held at the University of Warwick featuring renowned international speakers, addressing over 400 students from various top ranked universities in the UK and the rest of Europe.
Entirely student run it is the largest academic conference of its kind in Europe. Although the summit is the flagship event of the University of Warwick Economics Society it does not only revolve around economics, but also touches on many other relevant topics in the sphere of social studies such as development, politics, globalization and international relations, to attract a wide audience from many different academic disciplines.
In previous years the summit has had the honour to welcome speakers such as Professor John F. Nash Jr (Nobel Laureate 1994), John Kay (a leading British economist), Johannes Linn (from the World Bank), Dr. Kandeh Yumkella (Director General of UNIDO), Professor Paul De Grauwe (well-known global economist, regular Financial Times columnist) and Clive Crook (Deputy Editor of The Economist).

The aim of the Warwick Economics Summit is "inspiring students to shape tomorrow's world by engaging with today's"
[edit] Warwick Economics Summit 2008
The summit will take place place on the weekend of the 15th to 17th February 2008 at the University of Warwick.
The summit will feature the following elements:
- Wine Reception - A wine reception on Friday afternoon to get to know each other before the talks kick off.
- Single Speaker Talks - These are 30 to 45 minutes talks given by high profile speakers with a 15 minutes question and answer session on a specialised topic.
- Panel Discussions - Contemporary and controversial topics will feature several speakers discussing them. Chaired by a member of the Economics Department.
- Debate Event/Workshops (TBC) - Students will have a voice to express their opinions on a topical issue.
- Dinner and Dance Party - Held Saturday night (February 16th) in a nearby Hotel. An opportunity to socialise and network with students from across the UK and Europe.

[edit] 2007 - Challenging the Paradigms
The 2007 Summit was proudly sponsored by UBS.
Speakers included:
- Harriet Lamb: Director of the Fair Trade Foundation
- Dr Madsen Pirie: President of the Adam Smith Institute
- Professor Charles Wheelan: University of Chicago, author of "Naked Economics:Undressing the Dismal Science"
In addition, it was held on the same weekend of the first Economics Ball, organised by Warwick#s Economics Society.

The fifth annual Warwick Economics Summit was proudly sponsored by UBS, Bloomberg and Frontier Economics.
Speakers included:
- Prof. Norbert Walter, Managing Director at Deutsche Bank Research and Chief Economist of DB Group
- Dr. Dean Baker, Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington
- Prof. Charles Bean is the Executive Director and Chief Economist of the Bank of England
- Prof. Kandeh Yumkella is Director-General of UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). He is also the former Minister for Trade, Industry and State Enterprises of the Republic of Sierra Leone.
- Prof. Paul De Grauwe is a well-known global economist, regular Financial Times columnist and Economic Policy Adviser to the European Union President. Formerly he has worked for the International Monetary Fund and for the Belgian Parliament as Chairman of the Economic and Finance Committee.
- Vincent Cable MP is the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer of the Liberal Democrats.
- C.C. Edordu is the former President of the African Export and Import Bank.
- Lord Brittan is Vice-President of UBS, Conservative peer in the House of Lords and also works as consultant for Herbert Smith. He was a member of the European Commission from 1989 to 1999, serving as Vice President for much of the time. During his time at the Commission he held two of the most important portfolios, competition policy and trade policy .
- David Daly is the Director of Nike Football Club Business. From 2001 to 2005 he was based in Manchester working as GM of Manchester United Merchandising. He is currently working on an assignment as GM of Juventus Football Club Merchandising.

In 2005 the Economics Summit, sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland, had become one of the premier attractions of the student academic calendar. It was a tremendous success with more than 500 students from top UK universities attending and a total of 1,034 students on the waiting list.

- Prof. Ray Rees, world insurance specialist

[edit] 2004 - "Money for Nothing: The Dire Straits of The Modern Economy"
In 2004 the Economics Summit continued to grow in student popularity. About 300 students from Warwick and an increasing number of other universities attended the weekend packed with lectures, seminars, debates and socials revolving around the theme.

- Tony Golding, author of The City: The Great Expectations Machine
- Prof. Jean-Pierre Lehmann of IMD and pinoeer of the EVIAN group.

The second Economics Summit was held over the weekend of 24th-26th January 2003 and turned out to be an even greater success than the previous year.

[edit] 2002 - "No longer inevitable? The future of the World Economy after September 11"
The first Economics Summit, hosted by the Warwick Economics Society, took place between the 25 and 27 January 2002. This marked the first inter-university undergraduate Economics event in the UK. About 170 students including 40 non-Warwick students attended the lectures, debates and student led seminars.
