WarGames is the name of two different video games, both inspired by MGM's 1983 film WarGames. The first was released for the ColecoVision around the same time as the film. The second game for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation was released in 1998.

[edit] ColecoVision

The object of the first game is to use anti-ballistic missiles, interceptor jets, submarines, and a laser satellite to protect cities and bases from incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles, jets and submarines.

The United States is divided into six sectors, each with its own cities and bases. As cities and bases are destroyed, the Defense Condition (DEFCON) status for that sector decreases. The DEFCON level for each sector is factored into the total DEFCON status. When the total DEFCON status is at 1 for 60 seconds, or when all cities and bases have been destroyed, a counterstrike is launched and the game is over, where it ends suddenly. The visual appearance of the game is stark and technical. The game is won by preventing a counterstrike long enough for a cease-fire to be reached. With eight difficulty levels, one game takes approximately four to eight minutes. The principal designer was Coleco staffer Joseph Angiolillo.[citation needed]

The game was ported to the Atari 8-bit family and Commodore 64 family of computers.

[edit] Windows and PlayStation

The second game with this name is a real-time strategy/action game with the full title WarGames: DEFCON 1. It was released for the Playstation and Windows in 1998. It is very different from its predecessor, based around small-scale skirmishes and allowing the player direct control of units. It was developed by Interactive Studios and published by MGM Interactive.
