Talk:Warwick Medical School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a graduate from Warwick Med School I thought this Wikipedia entry might benefit from a previous student's perspective. I'm currently an F2 in General Medicine at UHCW, where we undertook large parts of our training. The university has changed dramatically in the few years since I graduated so I may have a slightly out of date take on the course and university as a whole.
As far as the course goes, I would be surprised if it was that dramatically different to any other medical degree, having been to Birmingham university and graduated from BMedSc I was subjected to the same year of lectures as the medics and felt that those we had at Warwick were not so different. Admittedly Warwick does somewhat push the social science side of things, which as a student I didn't have a great objection to, these were pleasant stress free lectures and involved visiting the 'community' and drinking plenty of tea. In retrospect I do feel however that I didn't perhaps learn 'how to be a Doctor' from these experiences and question their importance in training a junior doctor. Our curriculum weighed heavy on these aspects of medicine and though I appreciate the importance of this kind of training for GPs I feel now that I would have been better equipt for finals and indeed MRCP if there had been more emphasis on clinical medicine.
However, it is always more simple to find the negatives than the positive. As a doctor on the ward, I do not feel at any further disadvantage to my collegues who graduated from more established universities such as Bristol or Birmingham. I would say that I am at a great advantage in respect to a more mature and hard working attitude (perhaps this is solely due to my advanced age!) and perhaps more driven to advance in my career. I enjoyed my postgraduate experience more than my first degree, and felt confident that I had always made the right discision in persisting with my studies. I have never regreted choosing Warwick over a different Med School when I was offered places at Kings College London and Bristol, and would choose to come to Warwick if I had to make the choice again.85.95.109.222 15:51, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
