Talk:War to end all wars
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clearly, the war to end all wars has not happened, as we are still fighting wars.
Does anyone have a cite for who called WWI "the war to end all wars"? Was it President Woodrow Wilson?
Here's a site which suggests that H. G. Wells said it first... http://home.hccnet.nl/r.ruggenberg/greatwar/quotes/immortal33.html
But where's a cite?
For a cite check Wells' 1914 essay titled "The War That Will End War”
My recollection is that is was dubbed "the war [specific] to end war [general]": it certainly has the ring of a Wilsonism, since no-one else seems to have given a damn about ending war [general] - Plus ça change, etc., [etc.] Graculus 18:25, 8 Aug 2003 (UTC)
The title "World War I" etc is also an American designation to this conflict. In the British Commonwealth, the accept nomenclature is "First World War," or "Second World War."
Does anyone know / have a reference for how many wars have taken place since the war to end all wars? Obviously this would depend on the precise definition of a war versus a conflict or something smaller scale. I think that would be interesting to add to the article. 144.32.128.68 23:17, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
From a rough count from wikis list of wars I make approximately 180 wars since wwi. I have added a line saying more than a conservative 150 wars have been fought since then. I did find one site as a possible reference with 160 wars but was a little concerned about its reliability so have not added it as a source. 144.32.128.68 23:36, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
