Wananga

In New Zealand, a wānanga is a type of publicly owned tertiary instution that provides education in a Maori cultural context. According to legal definitions (reaffirmed by the Waitangi Tribunal in 2005), wānanga are similar in many ways to mainstream universities. Currently, wānanga offer certificates, diplomas, and Bachelor degrees, and some provide programmes in specialized areas through the Doctoral level. Wānanga educational programmes are accredited through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and Ministry of Education, and are partly governed by New Zealand's Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

In traditional times wānanga conveyed meanings related to highly evolved knowledge, lore, occult arts, and also 'forum' in the sense of a discussion to arrive at deeper understanding.
