[edit] Airline Infobox
- Airline infobox: Wikipedia:WikiProject Airlines/Codes has the disucssion on this issue. We have decided to make the infobox standard for airline articles, although we have not decided for certain whether we will keep the {{airline codes}} template. I have been removing the "Code Data" section from articles after I add the infobox, and one user has decided to restore them, after which I remove them again. While we haven't officially adopted the stance of removing the section, the project structure calls for an infobox and the removal of redundant information (i.e. the "Code Data" section). If you have any comments or simply would like to see what's happening, please visit the project page. If you are interested in helping out, the best thing to do would be to add the infobox to additional articles. Thanks. Dbinder 14:15, 19 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Newcastle DAB
Yeah, sorry. I wasn't sure what the consensus was about whether to link to the city of the airport. I'm doing an overall DAB of Newcastle as opposed to working specifically on the transport articles. I started off linking to the city, then I noticed some links to the airports. Anyway, at least this way it draws people's attention to what Newcastle actually links to. Cheers. [edit] Bradistan
I did do a google search. find me a sensible page that uses the term and not just someone slagging off the Leeds/Bradford and using it as a racial slur. You state that the Huardian uses it. Searching their site I only find one reference to it, and it is here - [1] - even here it is in double quotes and it is a comment piece not an news article. Jooler 22:47, 7 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Upsized image?
I was looking at Image:Deepcut_Barracks.jpg and I noticed you upsampled the image. Please don't do that. Mediawiki will automatically scale to any size the user asks for... If you upsample image it will be harder to tell which image from a set is probably of higher resolution. Thanks. --Gmaxwell 14:54, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Flag of Scotland
Why have you dowloaded a new version of the flag of Scotland, and changed the link on many important pages to your new version? To the casual observer they are (almost) identical, except your version appears slightly more elongated. Compare:
Yours also appears to be the correct Pantone 300, but it does not state that it is the correct 3:5 ratio (the original does), and worryingly it uses far fewer bytes: does this mean fewer pixels and thus poorer definition? I note that they both have the same author, User:Kbolino, so why did they not just replace the original image themselves, rather than going round manually changing every link? I was just wondering why you are going to all this trouble when the effect is negligible.--Mais oui! 13:18, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
- The version I am changing over to is in SVG format, rather than PNG format of the other (the original is SVG format). SVG format is much more appropriate because it is a vector format that can be enlarged or reduced to any size without any loss of quality - I was prompted to do this when I saw the flag on the Scottish Portal page, it had terrible jaggie lines caused. SVG is smaller because the file is really only a list of coords which to draw lines between and fill with colour (rather than a bitmap in the PNG version). The flag is the same size when you force the pixel width (I've updated your example above to illustrate this).
- I'll update the image page to note the aspect, colour, and categories.
- Thanks/Wangi 13:28, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

- Goodness me: you learn something new every day! I was wondering about those jaggy lines on the Scotland Portal only yesterday, and already some kind soul (you) has fixed them. I am very grateful. Thanks.--Mais oui! 13:47, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your FidoNet logo
Hey there. I replaced your rendition of the FidoNet logo (Image:FidoNet-logo.png) with a screen capture of the original ASCII logo (Image:FidoNet.png). I feel that this is more appropriate for three reasons:
- Image:FidoNet.png is the actual FidoNet logo, so it is more relevant to the article. (For the same reason, Image:USPresidentialSeal.jpg would be better than a hand-drawn facsimile or artistic painting of the seal for the Seal of the President of the United States article.)
- Your logo is an artistic rendition of the FidoNet logo; however, the original FidoNet logo is a trademark of Tom Jennings. It may also be under copyright, but if you have a citation which proves it is in the public domain, then by all means let me know. For these two reasons, it may be a violation of trademark/copyright laws to publish a derivative work of the logo and to release it under the GFDL as you have done.
- Your logo obscures the fact that the original logo was ASCII artwork. I feel it is important for the article to show the ingenuity of FidoNet users in transcending the restrictive medium they were forced to work in.
—Psychonaut 15:58, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
- Psycho, brings back memories of far too many damn Fidonet discussions about this sort of nonsense! Basically, whatever. However the actual Fidonet logo registered trademark is detailed in these two documents - [2], [3] (managed to find two documents I read many years ago). Hand drawn would seem to be the description... Therefore I would strongly disagree with the claims that my image (I must have made it 8 years back) might violate copyright, of course Tom Jennings is free to disagree himself, but lets just leave that to him!
- Don't know if you've used a rustic enough version of the courier font with that screen grab! :)
- Thanks/wangi 16:23, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] English Flag
Eh, you seem to be swapping the flag images around (see [4]) opposite to what's said in Commons:Image talk:England flag.svg, surely Image:Flag of England.svg is the one to be kept, and Image:England flag.svg is the redundant one? Well that's what it say on that talk page and the image...
"Flag of xxx.svg" does seem to be the standard naming convention.
wangi 12:59, 12 November 2005 (UTC)
- That would because the message was written a clear half hour after I finished editing. I may aim for perfection, but I'm not psychic! :-)
- I can see the logic of the naming convention, so I'm happy to go along with this if it is the concensus. When I discovered Image:Flag of England.svg I just thought it was easier to replace its three links instead of the hundreds on Image:England Flag.svg.
[edit] Panoramas
- I see you commented to me about the usefulness (or lack of) of the panoramas I've been linking to. [edit] Bold text in oneworld
Re. your recent edits to the oneworld article, I was under the impression from all official alliance documentation and promotional materials that the correct usage is oneworld, not oneworld. OzMikado 01:11, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
Can you point out where in the style guide it indicates that oneworld should not be placed in bold? I see that it says use bold-face judiciously, but I believe that conforming to the correct typeface for a word should qualify (likewise, titles should be capitalized, but oneworld is in all lowercase, as is called for by the company.) [edit] Unsourced
The statements at {{unsourced}} are only suggestions. My experience is that most people put the tag at the top of the article. It doesn't really make sense to put it at the bottom. Something as vital to Wikipedia as sourcing articles shouldn't be dumped to the bottom of the page. Also, many articles, such as cities and countries, only have external links going to maps of area. These are not sources. So it can't be strictly true that external links = sources. We should be responsible for explaining where our content came from, not simply telling people where they can go to find trusted information. This isn't a link farm. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-1 14:57
- There has been a long running discussion/poll at Template talk:Unreferenced over these issues, perhaps this discussion should be moved there. - SimonP 16:04, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
How have I deleted the messages? They're archived because the discussion was essentially over. But, now people are rehashing it because they think I've deleted it. This discussion does not belong on my talk page, it belongs at Template talk:Unsourced. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-1 21:04

[edit] News and image
Hi!
I believe, since the majority of your work is about airports and the like, to have a look at the current events page. It is about the CIA using Scottish airports as "ghost flights". Also, the image for Edinburgh Int'l Airport, of the the tower, has that even been built yet! I remember seeing it in the Evening Times, but I am sure they said it was just a plan, and would (eventually) take over Glasgow Int'l Airport. Thanks, --Kilo-Lima 15:27, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Ship index pages
Since ship names tend to get reused over and over, on ship index pages we need more than a bare list of article names, so that people can easily find the ship they're looking for, e.g. "the schooner", "the one launched in the 1860s", "the one sunk in WW2", or "the one later renamed Tien Shan". See Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships#Index page template. Maybe they should be in a subcategory of Category:Disambiguation, but in the meantime I don't see any reason to subtract information that's already there.
—wwoods 19:50, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- I want enough detail on an index page so that some item waves its hand, and says, "Me! I'm the one you want." I really don't see the point of trying to cram all the disambiguating features of a ship into a single line. What's wrong with casting the information in complete sentences? What is it we're trying to save, disk space, screen space? Stripping away the details won't make the page easier or quicker to use, if the reader has to go chasing down each entry, or go outside Wikipedia for the articles we don't have.
- Calling it a list of stubs, or a list of abstracts, is one way of looking at it. And there's nothing unique about this page—those two ships aren't likely to get articles anytime soon, since there are a zillion other articles to do. Look at, for instance, List of United States Navy ships, M (Hmm, I notice there's now a fourth Merrimack.)

[edit] Cleanup task force
When I ran into it they had hit Mccarran and removed normal airport information. At that time I traced it back to being listed on a page of articles that in someone's opinion really needed cleanup. I was able to find Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce but that page does not look anything like the page I found back when the changes were happening. I'm thinking that this is the right project and like everything else, the look of the page has evolved. Vegaswikian 06:28, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Regarding your edit summary [6], I'd be interested to hear from you on why you think Hong Kong should not be listed with its own section. In case you've any query, I'm most happy to explain and illustrate. Thanks. — Instantnood 05:58, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes I followed that string of discussion. You've only said " Everyother section is a country, Hong Kong should be listed under China. " [7] without stating your rationale in details, that's what I'm interested to know. — Instantnood 14:20, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Underscores
Hi Wangi. Pop-up assisted redirects supply the Wikilink for the target article (in this case, apparently with underscores), so they can't be run to insert a Wikilink of the user's choosing (e.g. without underscores). Do the underscores cause any kind of problem? They don't show up when hovering the cursor over the link (either with pop-ups enabled or without) and they don't show up at the top of the target page once the link has been followed the way the redirect link would show if this were still in place. Let me know if they do cause some kind of problem that I'm unaware of - they could always be amended manually... Regards, CLW 19:39, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- Pop-up assisted redirects never create unpiped wikilinks. If however you believe that this is a problem, you may wish to take this up with the developer, User:Lupin. But I don't want to create any ill feeling over this, so I've been through and changed them all manually. CLW 14:57, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] De Havilland link on Sea Vixen article
The link to De Havilland's website was included as the site contains more of the history of the aircraft and allows the Wikipedia visitor the opportunity to download additional information and pictures.
The original link was added some weeks back (with no editorial censorship or removal), and it seems odd that it has now only been removed after I have made a point about another user changing the name of our company. To me, this seems like petty editorial shenanigans to try and 'get one back' and goes entirely against the grain of the purpose of Wikipedia. I believe that Wiki was created to promote knowledge about subjects and offering links to external sources - thus trying to prevent the reinventing the wheel syndrome. Or maybe, I'm just wrong, naive or on the receiving end of some quite churlich and unnecessary editing.
I await the answer with baited breath...not! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lordknowle (talk • contribs) 2005-12-28 11:11:37

[edit] Photo Galleries
Hi. My intention in adding links to my photo galleries was to add links to content of relevence to readers of the articles concerned. I take your point that some articles (such as the one on Edinburgh) are bco ming cluttered and perhaps cannot support further links. However, the Selby Railway Station page has hardly any content as yet. I was intending to add some content to the Wikipedia entry and in the interim placed a link to the relevent gallery on my site. I'm not trying to 'spam' my site, simply to point users who are interested in a given subject to pictures which may be of interest. I also noticed that you removed the link from the Trams page to the National Tramway Museum. Surely that's a relevent link and proof that I'm not just trying to 'spam' my own site. --Lee 18:33, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Taint
Hello. I'd like to thank you for sending me the links to help me better understand the philosophy of wikipedia. I found much of the info helpful.
Now as to my article that you redirected to wikitonary; I wrote that article because I felt that it had cultural relevance. I tried to note this in the article and felt that this would be expanded on if the article was allowed to stand. However the article was redirected within an hour, or less, of it's posting and so had no chance to expanded on by others.
The problem with redirecting this article to wikitonary site is that the term there is completly diffrent in meaning. This means redirecting the refernce deletes my article without giving it a chance for discussion.
I know several people have written an article with the same title as either a joke or a simple defintion. I tried to write an article that had some culutral refrences as well as a diffention of the term without unnessessarry vulgarity. I hope that you will reconsider letting that article be brought back (I notice it has been redirected several times) or telling me why it is not an article worth having (a very similar term ,choad, has it's own article). At the very least I would like to see it as an article considered for deletion so that the subject could be discussed.
Thank you very much for your time and the links that you sent me.--Cenestrad 20:02, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- Replied at Talk:Taint#What to do?. Thanks/wangi 18:00, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
I understand that wikipedia is not a dictionary. That is why I tried to include text that made the subject culturally relevant. If your mission is to eliminate all articles that are mere dictionary definitions you should redirect the articles on perineum, anus, genitals vagina, rectum and many other anatomical entries. If your goal is to eliminate vandalism I think you would be better served by letting this article stand than be forced to redirect a juvenile entry every two weeks or so. If you think the term is a neologism or that it is not relevant enough to warrant an article I suggest you goggle the term. I did and received over 100,000 hits.
I believe that creating a category of American Sexual Slang and redirecting the term Taint to that page may be the solution. Again thank you for your time.--Cenestrad 03:27, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
First I would like to thank you for redirecting the Taint article to the Articles for deletion page. I don't care so much if my article is deleted as long as it's given a chance. Now a simple question; Is the term "ain't" used at all in Europe as far as you can tell? I have gathered that Taint is not but I am unsure to as the term ain't. Again thank you for your time --Cenestrad 04:57, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] U2 (disambiguation)
Hi Wangi, just noticed that you changed the sentence for the easyJet entry. From what I know, U2 does not directly refer to easyJet, but it's the IATA code actually. And besides, the current entry isn't clear at all — "easyJet, IATA airline code"? Though disambig entries should be short, but at least they should be concise, structurally and grammatically correct, and clear at the same time. Regards, Andylkl [ talk! | c ] 13:26, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, it does refer directly - you'll see the term bolded on the easyJet page for example and the term is prefixed to all easyJet flight numbers. That format is consitent with all the other IATA airline and airport codes I have come across on disambig pages, e.g.: BD, EDI, and many, many others. Thanks/wangi 13:34, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
- As a bit of background - I actually "got into" this disambig page repair because of the IATA airport codes! Thanks/wangi 13:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for the reply. :) Though could you give the entry in the dab page a little bit more of an explanation or a rephrase? Just now I made a slight edit and inserted the trailing words in parentheses because the earlier version does seem a bit weird in my eyes.

Seems we had an edit conflict that I wasn't aware of. I certainly did not add back that duplicate entry on purpose. I was editing your just-previous version, not realizing you were still working on it. peace, Tedernst | talk 17:19, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Colin MacIntyre
It's done and so are all the redirects. Also Mull Historical Society is now a disambiguation page to Colin MacIntyre and Mull Historical and Archaeological Society. Did you pick me to do that because I used to live in the area? Is Colin from Mull? Once spent a week on Mull. Cheers CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 19:39, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Scotland
I've added the Monymusk Reliquary, as well as some other images, to a new section, Gallery of Images, at the bottom of the Scotland page, for images that users may like to see on the main Scotland page, but which do not fit well with any particular section. Astrotrain 20:48, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] coor dms2
Is there any good reason you know of to use this as opposed to coor dms. The picture in coor dms2 is clearer but you can't see the airport. You have to zoom in and then you just end up with the same fuzzy picture (depending on the area). CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 12:02, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Many of the airport infoboxes currently use the "coor dms" template to display the coordinates with a link to the "map sources" page. The problem with "coor dms" when used in the airport infobox is that some browsers wrap the text onto a second line creating something which looks like this:
- 35°41′21″N, 51°
- 18′49″E
- The point of creating "coor dms2" was to have it wrap in a more logical point, between the latitude and longitude:
- 35° 41′ 21″ N
- 51° 18′ 49″ E
- I also added spaces between the degrees, minutes and seconds to make it easier to read. The only difference between "coor dms" and "coor dms2" is how the text is displayed. Both templates should generate the same URL for the Map Sources page, assuming they are given the same coordinates. The reason for the change in the Castlegar Airport page is because besides changing from "coor dms" to "coor dms2", I also added "type:airport":
- original:
- {{coor dms|49|17|47|N|117|37|57|W|}}
- 49°17′47″N, 117°37′57″W
- this causes the map sources page to use a scale of approx. 1 : 300,000
- my edit:
- {{coor dms2|49|17|47|N|117|37|57|W|type:airport}}
- Template:Coor dms2
- this causes the map sources page to use a scale of approx. 1 : 30,000

Wangi - I've added a {{geograph}} template to Commons. I tagged Image:De Havilland Aircraft Museum Hertfordshire.jpg as an example. - Crosbiesmith 15:53, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "taint" no sources
hey wnagi I have to admit that I have no real sources for my bit on taint other than my grandmother, and my great uncle, who gave me the info. I was hoping someone else may be able to add to it, as it seems that it may be of some value as to establishing the amount of time the expression taint has been relevent in our culture. I noticed that some of my other ideas had been addded to the used (howard Stern, taking out the term satanic) but this one had not, so I thought I wopuld give it a go myself. Im not really profiecent on computors having owned my first one for less than a year now, and am triing to stay just profecient enough to be able to stay ahead of my daughter.
On another note, I noticed that you have tidied up the taint article and added to it, even though you didnt seem at first to really want it there. Thanks for that. Politics is the art of compromise and you seem to be able to disagree with a person without taking it personally. Perhaps you could look into info on "the smell of his taint" terminology and help me make my first real contribution to wikipedia Pickelbarrel 22:59, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for the info Wangi...I was triing to find info in the library and its nice to know that their is no botherPickelbarrel 10:53, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Noise Root page (sorry re revert)
Lindosland, it's common practise to give a reason, either on the talk page or in the edit when reverting. I gave a valid reason for removing the root page header - WP:ASR, which is an accepted guideline. Thanks/wangi 22:10, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, I nearly gave a reason, which is that I don't feel the root page matter to be resolved yet, and since this page is quoted as a demonstation page I think it should remain up until a decision is made there. I'm thinking more about aspects of summary style before answering. --Lindosland 22:26, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Yes, read that, and I note the reasons. The truth is, I'm not sure where to go next. I dislike templates (too bold and get in the way). I dislike the big templates in some serial style articles, and note that others do to. But I still think Root page offers things that are needed but not covered by serial style. I need to think more about the optimum solution, as I am not keen to challenge serial style, which has clearly had a lot of effort put into it. --Lindosland 22:35, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Taint Discussion
the reason I blanked the majority of the taint discussion page is because it was about the old article and does not relate to the new one. I felt it would just be in the way.--Cenestrad 18:17, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] DND

[edit] Norman Island
Hi :), I got it from "Where's Where" (Eyre Methuen, 1974). I think I will put it back as there are lots of web references to this AS A CLAIM only. I think its a legitimate topic for the article, especially the idea that "a sea-faring uncle" told RLS of it. I'll put in your Edinburgh contender. Add in any more if you know of them. [edit] Scottish railway templates
I do not understand why you have reverted the Template:Railway lines in Scotland. It is using the standard format as used by all the other templates for the rest of the UK. The colour coding of the Glasgow suburban lines is to match the colour of the line used on Strathclyde Passenger Transport's map, much as the Valley Lines colours are used for the Template:Railway lines in Wales. [edit] DND
I performed a cut and paste history merge on DND/DND (disambiguation). From the history I can't tell what my error was. From you comments I'm guessing DND redirected somewhere. Could you explain what the problem was?--Commander Keane 04:40, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Taint - What to do
I have a few questions for you wangi. You have done quite abit to help me in the past. The first is regarding a possible external link I found for the sight taint, and is an audio clip by David Cross http://www.blowupthemoon.com/samples/showphoto.php?photo=34&password=&sort=1&cat=998&page=1 I have sent this link to Uncle G be has yet to answer any of my posts(I was hoping that if I could get him to contribute he might become fond of the page he previously disliked, but Im thinking the effort might be futile. Oh well never hurts to try). Perhaps You can let me know what you think. Also I tried to write my first article about a band (called Smashed gladys) and am not sure I did it correctly. It has been put up for speedy deletion so I assume it meets the requirements to be a ligitament band, but Im not sure if I should list songs or side projects of the band or just leave it as is.Finally some one who I asked to not be so hard on UncleG(he had made fun of Uncle in his webpage) told me to "eat shit" is this acceptable in wikipedia. I dont really mind it, and in fact thought it was humorous but Im just curious Pickelbarrel 02:00, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I apologize for being slow
I'm quite a slow editor what with the phone ringing off the hook here and everything. :-( It is not my intention, obviously, to cut off debate. But the proper place for a debate of this type is not CfD. There are deep questions here having to do with how, exactly, we are going to go about reforming and improving and reinventing ourselves as we continuously improve our processes, but the sickness of taking every little thing to the pit of CfD is just absurd.

Well done for feeding the sockpuppets!--Mais oui! 22:35, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- I am very glad that you acknowledge that the Editor is "misguided". He/she has also created at least 3 sockpuppets. And then you go and encourage him/her by restoring their hateful junk. Administrator Morwen had been making progress with introducing NPOV to that horrendous article, and then you get the ball rolling again
out of some petty grudge against me. Again, very, very well done.--Mais oui! 22:44, 19 January 2006 (UTC)- (Hissy-fit humbly withdrawn.)--Mais oui! 23:10, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Asking for possible help re an uncivil Wikipedian
Hey Wangi I hope you can help me on this one, you have been an enourmous help in the past. I couldnt ask UncleG becuase the scoundral keeps infecting his page. Awhile back Inoticed a fellow kind of ripping on uncle so I asked him to please quit. he responded by telling me to "eat shit DICK elbarrel" on my homepage. after I again responded he attqcked me on Uncle G's webpage as seen here User talk:Uncle G#? and here User talk:Uncle G#Put your dog on a leash, now I am not sure about how I go about getting this creatin kicked off of wikipedia for good. If you could respond here becuase otherwise Im afraid he'll read it (on either my homepage or uncles) thanks for any help you can give me. Pickelbarrel 23:09, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Pickelbarrel, the best advice I can give is to just try and ignore it - delete the comments off your talk page and just let it lie. If you don't bite they'll loose interest. Thanks/wangi 23:11, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
- I thought there was a site where you could reprimand people for being uncivil??? thanks again for your help...I just hate to see these jerks get away with this crapPickelbarrel 23:15, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
