Please note that you do not need to write 3*(10^6)-1 or the like; you can just write 3 × 106 − 1 (The "minus" character is distinctly longer than a stubby little hyphen, and that makes it more legible in some cases, especially if it's in a subscript or superscript; in some cases some spacing before and after minus or plus are equals helps legibility). If fancier mathematical notation is needed, you can use TeX, thus:

\int_0^\infty 1\,dx + \sum_{k=3}^{12} x^{k+9}-{3 \over 4}.
