Arnott joined Queen's Park from Pollokshields Athletic F.C. in 1882 and remained with the Glasgow club until his retirement in the mid 1890s. However, he occasionally played as a guest for several other clubs including Northern Irish side Linfield - for whom he won an Irish Cup medal, Newcastle West End F.C., Notts County, St. Bernard's and Celtic.
At Queen's Park, he won the Scottish Cup three times in 1884, 1886 and 1890. He also won FA Cup runners-up medals in 1884 and 1885.
He was capped 14 times by Scoland between 1883 and 1893 and was on the losing side just twice. He also appeared in 10 consecutive matches against England - a Scottish record.
