Walter A. Brown Trophy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Walter A. Brown Trophy was awarded to the National Basketball Association team who won the NBA Finals at the conclusion of every basketball season from 1946 to 1977.[1] The trophy was similar to the Stanley Cup of hockey since it was a bowl placed above engraved panels listing the previous championship teams. The trophy was kept by the winning team for one year, and given to the next championship team after the following finals. Walter A. Brown was the original owner of the Boston Celtics, and helped found the NBA. The original NBA championship trophy was renamed for Brown after his death in 1964.
[edit] Replacement and later renaming
A new trophy design was created for the 1977 NBA Finals, though it retained the Walter A. Brown title. Unlike the original championship trophy, the new trophy was given permanently to the winning team. The trophy was renamed to honor former NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien for the 1984 NBA Finals.
