The song tells a story of a boy whose father has alcoholism. It starts by telling about the boy waiting for his dad to come home at night, and then his dad just going and passing out drunk in his chair. Then it talks about the boy, now 18 years old and graduating from high school, watching his father leave the gym drunk before the boy's name was called. In the end, it says that one thing the boy learned from his father is that he will never drink and put his kids through that.
