[edit] Description and background
-
"Walk Away" The song was the fifth and last single from the album, Breakaway, by Kelly Clarkson. - Problems playing the files? See media help.
Clarkson called "Walk Away" "one of the brighter songs" on Breakaway, and said that "It's just one of those anthem songs where everybody is [bouncing their heads] in the car." She said of its subject matter, "the whole song is just about if it's not working out, then just leave, don't stay and make it worse."[1]
Initially, "Addicted" had been planned for release as the fifth single, but its release was cancelled when RCA deemed its dark tone and message too similar to that of Clarkson's previous two singles, "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Because of You".[citation needed] "Gone" was picked as the replacement, but it was dropped because of similarities to another single from the album, "Since U Been Gone". After two months of airplay on U.S. pop radio stations, "Walk Away" was released as the fifth single from Breakaway in 2006. By that point, "Gone" had amassed considerable airplay on popular radio stations in major markets such as Atlanta, Boston, and New York City.
"Walk Away" made a tremendous impact in Thailand, and Thai pop band Endorphine adopted it into their song "Sak-Ka-Waa Bpaak Waan".
[edit] Music video
The music video for "Walk Away" was shot from February 4 to February 5 in Los Angeles,[citation needed] and Clarkson wrote the treatment for it.[1] It was to be released on February 25 at the TRL Awards, but was pulled because director Joseph Kahn said it needed some "touching up".[citation needed] The video premiered on British music channels on March 6, and on TRL and MuchOnDemand on March 7. Of the fifty days it was eligible for the TRL top ten video countdown, it was at number one nineteen times, including on its last day, June 1.[2] The video was voted thirtieth in VH1's "Top 40 Videos of the Year" for 2006.[3]
In the video, alarm clocks wake up several different people. Clarkson is at a radio station singing "Walk Away" live, and various people—including a man showering, a woman at an office, twin brothers, a football player, and a man cleaning his house—are singing along. One man, played by Clarkon's brother Jason, is discovered singing the song in a public restroom. As soon as he is found, he runs out in embarrassment. In his place, the man who found him begins singing along. Another man sings along in a car, and he eventually gets out of the car to dance, holding up traffic. The video is intercut with shots of Clarkson performing the song with a band.

[edit] Chart performance
"Walk Away" debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number ninety-seven[4] on the chart dated January 21, 2006. The single premiered on the Canadian BDS Airplay chart on January 28 at number 100.
"Walk Away" became Breakaway's first release to fail to achieve top ten status on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number twelve.[5] A popular radio recurrent, it spent the longest number of weeks after its peak to exit the Hot 100 of any Breakaway single. "Walk Away" left the Billboard top fifty on August 10, and on the Hot 100 2006 year-end chart, it was ranked forty-fifth. It became a top ten hit in Canada.
In the United Kingdom, where the single's video became available on television music channels seven days before the single release, the song debuted and peaked at number twenty-one, and in Australia, it reached number twenty-seven—the peak positions in those countries were lower than those for the album's previous singles.
