Dr. Walid Phares, is an American of Lebanese descent, and expert on global terrorism and Middle Eastern affairs. He is a Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) in Washington, D.C., and a Visiting Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels.
He has published a number of articles in Middle East Quarterly, Global Affairs, Journal of Middle East, South Asian Studies, The Journal of International Security Studies and other specialized journals,[citation needed] and has written several books.
Phares has testified before committees of the State, Justice, Defense and Homeland Security Departments, the US Congress, the European Parliament, the United Nations Security Council, and is a frequent guest on NBC, Fox News, ABC, CBS, PBS,BBC, Al Hurra TV, France 24, Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya News programs. He was an MSNBC analyst between 2003 and 2006 and is now a Fox News Terrorism and Middle East. His columns have appeared in The Washington Times, World Defense Review, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Denver Post, Indianapolis Star, San Diego Tribune and many other publications.[citation needed]

Walid Phares was born in Lebanon, where he studied at the Lebanese and St Joseph Universities. After obtaining degrees in Law, Political Science and Sociology, he practiced law in Beirut. He then obtained a Masters degree in International Law from the Universite de Lyon in France and a Ph.D. in International Relations and Strategic Studies from the University of Miami.
He emigrated to the United States in 1990, where he has taught at several universities, such as Florida International University, the University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University and the National Defense University in Washington where he taught classes on Middle East Politics, Political History, Ethnic and Religious Conflict and International Terrorism.
Phares has lectured on US campuses nationwide and internationally including in London, Stockholm, Mexico, Paris, São Paulo, Brussels, Montreal, Geneva, Lisbon, Rome etc. He has also appeared on European, South Asian and Latin American television.
Phares has authored a number of books and articles and has served as the publisher of several publications. His op-eds appear in many US and international periodicals and newspapers. He has been an academic advisor to human rights, ethnic and diaspora groups.
Phares testifies to and briefs the US Congress and briefs the European Parliament and the UN Security Council. He has been a Terrorism expert at NBC from 2003 to 2006 and has been a contributor at Fox News since 2007. He is currently a Senior Fellow and the Director of the Future Terrorism Project at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies and a Visiting Scholar at the European Foundation for Democracy. He presently teaches at the National Defense University in Washington.
