WALF is a radio station based in Village of Alfred, located at 89.7FM. It is funded by the Alfred University Student Senate.
[edit] History
The station started in November 1971 in the basement of 6 Sayles Street, and has since moved twice, to Steinheim in the mid-70s, and then to its current location in the Powell Campus Center when it opened in 1993. The station is run entirely by students volunteering their time, and has a true freeform genre, allowing the 80+ volunteer student DJs to play what they want (within FCC regulations), who fill most of the time slots from 9:00am-2:00am. Other DJs include faculty and community members.
WALF is ranked the 15th best college radio station according to the Princeton Review, and the largest student organization on campus based on the number of students actively participating.
Many people have been interviewed by WALF, a great feat for such a small station. Recent interviews include Dar Williams and Ralph Nader in March 2006.
In Spring 2007, WALF is expected to start running morning news programs from Democracy Now! at noon and BBC World Service News before the live DJs start at 9:00a.
