June and pres.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the ping. I would be glad to talk about WP as used for academic collaboration (since academia, like WP is theoretically about the creation of trustworthy, free knowledge, relying heavily on references and 'history' and the power of thousands of eyes). Will think on a specific topic. Yes, I'll be busy, but an excuse to get out to Buffalo isn't a bad thing; I used to live in upstate NY. Perhaps, as you say, a technical discussion of ways that collaboration is facilitated here (as opposed to in more traditional venues) would be grand.

Also, we should start getting a few 1.0 subprojects up and running this and next week, using the impetus from the USA Today article... perhaps a tagging-campaign, a tie-in with two fact-checking wikiprojects, a "1000-article quality initiative" for the list-of-must-have-articles; even a "see what de-and-fr-and-ja are doing about quality control" project [they have some cool things going on].

SJ

Hey!

Hi, and thanks! I've been to Potsdam a few times, it's a nice place. Speaking of meeting up, there's an interesting event down in Boston, the second annual Wikimania conference. Should be fun, and I'm planning on going myself. Hope to see you there! Cheers, Sean|Black 06:18, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

P.S. This page is pretty long, you may want to archive it again.--Sean|Black 06:20, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I plan to go if the dates work, in fact I will probably be in Boston teaching anyway. I hope to present something on WP1.0 and quality checks in Wikipedia if I can attend. I hope to see you there! Thanks for mentioning my 56k of talk, I am a bit of a windbag. Now archived. Walkerma 07:02, 5 December 2005 (UTC)

Jesus

Check out the Jesus article and edit it to keep it focused on Jesus and a biographical account of Him. Watch the Jesus page to keep it focused on Him. Thank you. Scifiintel 22:37, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Visiting the lab soon...

Just wanted to drop by a note letting you know that I'll be back to my Uni later this month, and that I'll be able to access both organic and inorganic labs. If you have any requests for pictures of chemicals you may not have available in your lab, this would be a good time to let me know. Please drop me a note in my talk page with your request(s). Regards. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 01:10, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Certainly, I'll see what I can do. I also have access to a glove-box so taking the pictures of those compounds shouldn't be too much of an issue. Take care. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 15:39, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Folic Acid

Hi Martin, I'm afraid I don't know much about this chemical, probably less than you. I have not studied vitamins. Nevertheless, I had a look at it and came up with some suggestions. It seems as though the two articles that have been merged are Folic acid as a chemical and Folic acid as a nutrition supplement. Maybe this can be split into two articles. I would guess that most people would know folic acid as the tablets you see in the supermarket, so one article could cover that, and have a history of how it was discovered to be useful etc. and maybe some light chemistry/biology. And the other could be specifically the chemistry of the compound. A bit like how Water is now. Borb 22:59, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

Toluene

Hi Bartimaeus, I just saw your addition to toluene. I am concerned that this skews the article very heavily towards one minor technical aspect related to toluene. Speaking as an organic chemistry professor, I could add fifty pages of content with hundreds of references to reactions, properties, etc. of toluene. However I realise that this sort of thing is much too specialised for a general article that aims to give an overview of toluene. Could I ask you to consider reducing your section to a couple of sentences and merging it into the "Precautions and metabolism" section, then reducing the no. of references to one or two? Alternatively, if you think this is an important topic, could you start a new page dealing with toluene detection, or maybe better would be an article on human exposure to toluene and its metabolism/detection? Thanks, Walkerma 06:12, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

  • Good point, will start a new page. will fix it shortly. Bartimaeus 06:22, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
    • Will start a New article called Toluene (Toxicology). Bartimaeus 06:49, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
      • All done. Bartimaeus 07:27, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Feel free to throw any toxicology questions my way, I'm happy to help. I'm still cleaning up my toluene article, should be done by tomorrow, though I seem to have lost my reference for some of the properties in the table and will have to look them up. I'm not familiar with any dental studies but i'll look it up tonight at work and let you know. Bartimaeus 20:15, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

sorry it has taken so long to get back to you but I've been really busy with a project. I've found no articles on the dental effects of toluene, though this is not really in my field of study so I'm not sure what journals to read. I fixed up the toluene (tox) page finally, it still needs work but I have no time to spend on it. Let me know what you think.Bartimaeus 02:30, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

A little bit nervous

I have a case of newbieitis -- I am afraid to be bold on this project i've joined. is there an assessment rubric? TastemyHouse Breathe, Breathe in the air 07:12, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Wittig

Please see the comments on the talk page. Eugene Kwan 09:13, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Hey

Hey Martin. Thanks alot for your messege. Sorry I didn't reply earlier since I was very busy and probably wil be until the end of my academy semester early January. I'll be in Kuwait for a month and a half and I'll have alot of time to work on Version 1.0. But until now, I'll remain in low-gear activity on Wikipedia. Thanks --Ahmed 20:43, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Samarium(II) iodide

Did you know your samarium iodide picture has been deleted from under your nose? Wim van Dorst 21:09, 17 December 2005 (UTC). Thanks for letting me know, Wim. I think I uploaded it in the days when copyright tags were not clear. I should probably upload it to Commons anyway, and I'd like to get a close up picture too (it's such a pretty colour!). Cheers, Walkerma 04:05, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Ammonium thioglycolate

  • Looks wonderful. Better than I ever would have imagined. thanks. Antares33712 19:53, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Aldol reaction

I believe the Nature errors have been corrected. Could you double-check this for me? Thanks. ~K 03:37, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Sorry this took me a while to respond to (see the alsol talk page), I have been mostly offline lately. I have access to fast internet here at my brother-in-law's, but seven screaming children, two grandparents, two dogs and a parakeet aren't conducive to analysing subtleties of stereochemistry! I think that most of the errors have been addressed, except for the reversibility of many enolate-based conditions. I also think that the article is now "top heavy" in advanced material, we need to cover the basics better, I am willing to have a go at that if you and Eugene are OK with that. Happy New Year, Walkerma 21:20, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

I agree with most of what you've said. See that aldol reaction talk page. ~K 02:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello

Thanks for the information on the V1.0 project. I see you are a chemist too, and I added my name to help work on the two chemistry Wikiprojects. I hope we can work together. I hope one day students can log on here rather than buy a $150 chemistry textbook. It's much more easy to use and we can reproduce all the charts easily. Richard Arthur Norton.

Welcome aboard! Take a look at the Chemicals worklist if you want to work on chemical compounds – try to bring the article up to A-Class if possible. We also have a proposed worklist which looks likely to become policy of the Chemistry WikiProject, if you want to work on reactions, notable chemists, or more general topics. Again, the goal is to make every article A-Class. Cheers, Walkerma 05:07, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Work via Wikiprojects

Hello again Walkerma. :) I feel like I've abandoned you on Work via Wikiprojects, so I've made one of my New Year's Resolutions helping you contact the rest of the Wikiprojects. I just have two questions. I've seen a few articles that are marked as "good" articles. Would this correspond to a class B article. Also, what do we do with the Wikiprojects that haven't responded? --Shanel 05:15, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for getting in touch! My real name is Martin Walker, by the way. I've been busy with other things too, though I've tried to keep things ticking over at least, and I updated a few tables (a few still need doing). I think the good article (GA) standard seems reasonably high in most cases, and I think a good number would meet the A-Class level, but I'd let you be the judge. Some are pretty short to be A-Class, though in a few cases that's all that's needed, I accept. I've put the GA page on my watchlist, I think this will be a rich source of articles for WP 1.0. I think conversely the GA people may have been using our lists as sources of GA ideas! As for the ones that haven't responded, I think we should probably leave them until we've contacted all of the others then try again - unless you have other suggestions? Had a good chat with Maurreen recently, she likes what we're doing. Thanks and Happy New Year, Walkerma 06:25, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Chemdata supplement pages deletion

Thanks for your comment on the speed deletion of Toluene chemdata supplement. There are several more of these "...chemdata supplement" labeled pages that may need clean up using your datapage standard. It would be better though if the data could be nested within the same page to avoid the confusion of double standards. Shoefly 04:44, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

COTW Project

You voted for Humanities, this week's Collaboration of the week. Please come and help it become a featured-standard article. -- King of Hearts | (talk) 00:28, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

ACS Meeting

Good luck with your presentation at the ACS meeting on Wikipedia. It would be good if you could put some of the reactions to it on this page. Sorry, I put this on your user page, but have now moved it here. Best wishes. Bduke 00:05, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Template for the grading scheme, cyclone assessment work

I made it into a template so that it can be included in different places. In the "what links here" you can see I've added it in a couple different places. Jdorje 16:54, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

"Chemical"

I like the way that you rewrote the recent addtion to chemical substance. The original comment was quite unencyclopedic; but the way it is now, I think it should stay. Edgar181 18:30, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Wiki V 1.0

Thanks for the message :-) . Yes, I've just got my break and I started assessing the core articles. I'll have a look at the jobs to be done. Alot of work needs to be done. --Ahmed 11:23, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

WP:FAR

Six have been designated an "Article of concern" due to unresolved issues, and six reviews have passed with all issues addressed. Though FAR has not been extremely active, it has received quite a bit of positive attention, and the articles that have been reviewed have had some good comments. Before I send in the hordes...

Is there a template or a format agreed upon, i.e. a set of standard headings? Intro, key properties, structure, key rxns, fun stuff, toxicity, refs. For example, it seems that the first line should give the formula and common names.Smokefoot 18:43, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

I think your list looks pretty good. With inorganic compounds, I used to use something like the following as a starting point for section headings (based on what was commonly used already). Most of these were in the template originally, but they were removed, probably to allow flexibility. (Intro, with no header) then History, Structure/Physical properties, Chemical properties, Preparation, Uses, Biological role, Precautions, Suppliers/Manufacturers, External links, References. These headings or something like them have become fairly standard. Obviously you pick & choose; if it's sodium chloride the bio section is major, but if it's cerium nitrate it's non-existent. In many cases the structure and/or physical properties is adequately described in the table, but in same cases like hydrogen peroxide you may want to illuminate some particular aspect. With organics the situation is similar but there may be sections like Biosynthesis (see limonene), Occurrence, Synthesis, and maybe discussion on

things like the stereochemistry (see menthol), particularly with natural products. Make sure they only capitalise the first word of the the section header, unless it's someone's name. I hope it goes well. Walkerma 16:27, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

I forgot to mention - yes, the intro typically gives the commonest names in bold (though there's no need to list them all, there's space in the table for that). The formula is usually given. With inorganics I like to say something like, " Iron(III) oxide is the commonest oxide of iron" so there are links to the element and the anion. Then summarise major uses, properties, important/interesting facts; see hydrochloric acid for a longer example, or copper(I) chloride for a shorter one. Walkerma 16:40, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Here's the horde ;-). Practically, sectioning appears to come as:
  1. History
  2. Chemistry
  3. Production
  4. Application
  5. Safety
  6. Reference (important section!)
  7. See also, External Links, etc

But as pointed out by Martin: no obligation. You can read the Chem A-Class articles for good examples. Wim van Dorst 21:59, 25 January 2006 (UTC).

    • There is also a rather incomplete set of style guidelines. Please note that these are only guidelines: there is too much variety between different compounds to hope for a single set of applicable headers. For some compounds a "Toxicity" section is very important, for others it is completely useless, just to give one example! Physchim62 (talk) 08:49, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/WPArts

I went ahead and contacted the remaining Wikiprojects listed here, so now they're all contacted. I guess we still have to recontact some of them though.--Shanel 21:21, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

No problem. I'll try to recontact some projects tomorrow.--Shanel 05:07, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Well, I can only say "thanks to you too Martin." Right now I'm collecting material for skeletal catalyst, so expect another peer review sooner or later. Cheers. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 16:21, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
