Talk:Walter Pater
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I think the final paragraph of the article ought to be revised to cite the source of the criticism. The objections raised seem to be rather subjective, but they are stated as though they were objective in the article's text.

[edit] Pater and the Asceticism of Style
I think the portrayal of Pater's aesthetic style as totally opposed to asceticism is somewhat misleading. I quote the relevant sentence from the article: "Pater displays, with fullness and elaboration, his ideal of the aesthetic life, his cult of beauty as opposed to bare asceticism." According to many, including Pater's own contemporaries like Wilde, Pater's vision of beauty is conveyed in an ascetic and austere manner. His language indeed displays musicality, yet, it is rather calculated and characterized by economy of expression. This is a distinctive feature of the man and his prose and I strongly believe that it should be clarified in the body of article.
The walterpater.org link is no longer good.
[edit] The Guardian
This article says that Pater contributed essays to The Guardian. The link suggests that he wrote for The Manchester Guardian, as the paper was then called. But did he actually write for The Guardian, an ecclesiastical journal of the same name as the modern Guardian? In either case it is wrong. It should read The Manchester Guardian or The Guardian.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 17:43, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
