[edit] Background
According to Duff, the song "makes you want to forget about all the pressure of dealing with your boss, or your teacher, or your mom, or [whoever]. It's about getting out and not forgetting to have some fun."[2] She described the song's style as "very dancey, kind of pop — not '80s, but kind of with that in it, so it's very fun."[3]
Bill Lamb of About.com hailed it as the "pop anthem of summer 2005" and that "the singalong chorus is nearly perfect and a great one to share with friends". He gave it a 4.5 star rating, commenting that it is a perfect beach pop anthem.[4]
[edit] Chart performance
In the U.S., it was released to mainstream top 40 radio on July 12, 2005,[1] and it was the most requested song on Radio Disney the following month.[5] Largely because of high digital download sales, the single entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number twenty-nine in mid-August, the week's highest debut.[6] It spent two weeks in the top forty and six on the Hot 100, and it also reached the top forty on Billboard's Pop 100 chart. The song reached no.4 on the Hot Digital songs list in 2005. In late October 2005, the RIAA certified "Wake Up" gold for its download sales.[7]
"Wake Up" was more successful outside the U.S. It was released in the UK in late October and debuted at number seven, Duff's highest position on the singles chart there;[8] it stayed in the top forty for six weeks. In Ireland, it peaked inside the top five in its third week, and in Australia, it reached number fifteen, remaining in the top forty for eleven weeks. Its success across most of Continental Europe was limited: in Norway, it reached the top five, but it peaked outside the top twenty in France (where it remained on the chart for nineteen weeks), Switzerland and the Netherlands, and it did not reach the top forty in Sweden, Austria or Germany.[9]
[edit] Music video
The music video for "Wake Up" was directed by Marc Webb, who had directed videos for The Used, AFI and My Chemical Romance. Duff said she was "a huge fan" of the bands with whom he had worked, so she "was really excited" about his participation in the video. She described the style of the video as "kind of grainy" and "a totally different look for me."[2] Filmed in Toronto, Canada,[10] it shows Duff leaving her home and journeying to nightclubs and parties in London, New York City, Paris and Tokyo (four of the five cities referenced in the song's chorus, in addition to Los Angeles). Duff said the video "moves really quickly" and "has all [these] quick pops ... it just shows that no matter where you are, people want [to do] the same things: they dance and they party".[2] In each different city she is seen sporting a different look; for example, in Tokyo she a black wig, the experience of which inspired her to dye her hair dark after her tour.[2]
The world premiere of the video took place on the Disney Channel.[citation needed] The video's MTV premiere was on Total Request Live on July 15, 2005, and it reached number one on the show's countdown on three non-consecutive days.[11][12] After spending fifty days on the countdown, it was retired on October 6.[13]
