Wake Technical Community College

Wake Technical Community College, commonly known as Wake Tech, is a two-year accredited institution of higher education and technical training school, is located approximately five miles south of Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina and county seat of Wake County. Wake Tech is part of the North Carolina Community College System, a state-supported body of 58 institutions throughout North Carolina.
Current student enrollment is 57,000 and is projected to grow to 78,000 by 2015.[1]

Wake Tech was founded on April 3, 1958 as the Wake County Industrial Education Center. The school opened its doors on October 7, 1963, with 304 enrolled students, 34 of whom were registered in curriculum studies and 270 who were enrolled in vocational training programs. The school became Wake Technical Community College on December 1, 1987.
Wake Technical Community College first received school accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1969.[2]
In the 2008-2009 academic year, Wake Tech will add sports teams. Volleyball, men's soccer, and golf teams will start in fall 2008, and basketball, softball, and baseball will start later.[3] The school's mascot is currently the Eagle, though a contest is underway to come up with a new mascot.[4]

Today, Wake Tech offers 90 curriculum educational programs, including health sciences, business education, and college-university transfer programs leading to bachelors' degrees at four-year institutions. It also offers Early College high schools, part of the Wake County Public School System.

[edit] Main Campus
The main campus is located near McCullers Crossroads on US 401 between Raleigh and Fuquay-Varina. It consists of 13 buildings, most of which contain classrooms and faculty offices. Other buildings include Student Services, Bookstore, Independent Learning Center, and a Child Care Facility.
The main campus is not served by Raleigh's bus system, so a college-run shuttle serves the campus and downtown Raleigh, with an intermediate stop on Tryon Road in Raleigh.

The health sciences campus is located in east Raleigh near WakeMed.

The adult education center is located north of downtown Raleigh on Capital Boulevard (US 401).

The current Western Wake campus is located in Millpond Village, a subdivision on Kildaire Farm Road in southern Cary. Plans are underway to build a new campus in northwestern Wake County, closer to Research Triangle Park.[5]

In July 2007, Wake unveiled a newly-built $30.6 million environmentally-friendly campus in North Raleigh located on US 401 in northeastern Raleigh.[1]
