[edit] History

Waikato is a new electorate created for the 2008 election, following boundary changes made after the 2006 census of population and dwellings. There was also a previous Waikato electorate, from 1871 to 1963 and then from 1969 to 1996.

Most of the former Piako electorate forms the new Waikato electorate, with some to the neighbouring Hunua and Papakura electorates. Piako was first created as an electorate in the 2002 general election, replacing Karapiro, hence has only lasted for two elections.

The successive electorates in the area, the old Piako electorate, Matamata, and then Karapiro were represented in Parliament by Jack Luxton from 1966 to 1987, and then his son John Luxton from 1987 to 1999.
