[edit] History

The Waconia marching band was founded in 1972. Their first official performance was in 1973. Now in its 35th year of Marching, the Waconia marching band is one of the best marching bands in Minnesota.

In 1982 the Waconia Marching Band, was the first marching band to play inside the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It turns out NFL teams can only invite a high school band to do a half time show once, the Minnesota Vikings invited Waconia back four times.[1]

2006 was the final year for director Mark Dunton. He was offered to help direct with the Madison Scouts. He accepted. The former assistant director, Brady Krusemark, took over in the 2007 season along with the first year band teacher, John Pohland. Dunton still ended up writing half of the 2007 show.

[edit] Awards

The first official performance by the marching band was in 1973, where they won first place in their class. Although, as a disclaimer, Waconia was the only band in it's class at the time. [2] Out of the 325 or more competitions the marching band has competed in they have won 225 Grand Champion (first-place) trophies, 72 second-place trophies and 18 third place trophies. The band received first-place at all competitions in 2005. (WHS first) In 2005 they received Best Color Guard Award at the Calgary Stampede Parade. They have also received many other awards.[3]

[edit] Musical Selections

The Waconia Marching Band will be performing music excerpts from Carmen for the 2008 summer marching season, the show is entitle "Trempe Ardent" (aka (french accent) "Huh Huh Huh".) The band performed music excerpts from Jesus Christ Superstar for the 2007 summer marching season and Night Train for the 2006 summer marching season.

[edit] The Drum Line

The Waconia Drum line, directed by Christian Gilbert, marches the summer season in Minnesota and around the country as part of the Waconia Marching Band, and marches independently in the winter in various festivals including the Saint Paul Winter Carnival Parade. The group has also performed halftime performances for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Gophers.

[edit] Big Trip (2008)

This years Waconia marching band trip is to Seattle, Washington. The trip will take place from July 1-5. The band will be going by plane, not by train (as rumors said they were). Last year the trip was to Denver, Colorado.

[edit] The Lake Waconia Band Festival

The Lake Waconia Band Festival is the competition which is hosted by the Waconia marching band. This year is its 10th year of running. Its 2008 performances will be held on June 21st. Some of the bands that compete are last years Grand Champions and People's Choice Park Center, Owatonna, Richfield, St. Cloud and more. The Waconia marching band and Drum line also perform for exhibition. The parade route goes west on Main St. and South ending at the Carver County fairgrounds.

The Waconia marching band is supported by The Waconia Band Boosters, Inc. that works independently, though in close cooperation with the school district in providing services as well as financial support. It is also supported, morally, by the citizens, staff, and students of the District 110 community.
