Wa' Was Djy! (Afrikaans: Where were you! [va vʌs dʒy]) is a musical production staged by Natalia da Rocha's APPLAUZ! theatre company and premiered at Cape Town's ArtsCape Arena theatre in late December 2004. The semi-biographical piece has Natalia portraying the reminiscences of bag-lady, "Angel" - a fallen star - backed by young talent she scouts from underprivileged communities. The musical revisits the entertainment field of the turbulent 1960's and 70's South Africa focusing on Cape Town's prominent Coloured recording stars such as Jonathan Butler, Ronnie Joyce, Zane Adams, The Rockets and Abdullah Ibrahim a.k.a. Dollar Brand. One of the aims of Wa' Was Djy! is to illustrate to despairing, contemporary youth the real possibility of overcoming dire circumstances and enduring to become successes.
