The Shades of Jazz to Come is an album by multinational jazz-noise conglomerate Desert Island Dicks, released in 2008 by British independent label Amoebic Productions.
As with their previous record The Shape of Speech to Come, the title is derived from Ornette Coleman's seminal 1959 album The Shape of Jazz to Come. This time, the latter is also referenced musically, as the album applies the similar kinds of time-stretching process used by the Dicks on Bring Me the Head of Miles Davis... and Stretch Marks to Coleman's album.
[edit] Process
A sample equivalent to one tenth of the total length was taken from each of the six tracks on The Shape of Jazz to Come and subsequently stretched by ten times, so that the finished product was the same length as the original tracks. So, for instance, a 32.1 second snatch of Coleman's "Lonely Woman" was expanded to 321 seconds, or 5:02, its length on the original album.
[edit] Track listing
All tracks composed by Coleman/Dicks.
