While researching the background, I came across two forums posts that may provide the genealogy of "William Metcalfe", indicating he was born in 1803:

If that is the case, the early publications on the article are a problem, as publishing in 1811 would mean the boy started his career at age eight. John Vandenberg 11:35, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
William Metcalfe died on 12 November 1824, aged 54. His wife, Julia, died 5 Febrary 1845, aged 73.
