Wálter Herrmann (born June 26, 1979, in Venado Tuerto) is an Argentine professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons and was a member of the Argentina National Basketball team that won the gold medal during the 2004 Olympics.
Son of Héctor Herrmann and María Cristina Heinrich, he is of German descent.[1]. He is a key reserve on the Argentina national basketball team, and signed a one-year contract for $2 million with a team option for a 2nd year to play for the Charlotte Bobcats during the 2006-07 NBA season[2]. He is listed at 6' 9", 225 lb and has dual citizenship: Argentine and Spanish.
Herrmann won NBA Eastern Conference rookie of the month honors in March 2007.[3] In his 13 March games, Herrmann averaged 12.1 points and 4.2 rebounds and finished 58.5 percent on field goals and 47.2 percent on 3-pointers. Herrmann finished the 2006-07 NBA season out averaging 9.2 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. Wálter scored his career-high 30 points against the Milwaukee Bucks on April 14. Wálter made NBA All-Rookie Second Team along with teammate Adam Morrison at the end of the season. Following the season, the Bobcats activated their team option for the 2007-2008 NBA Season, Hermann will make $1.94 million next season. He recently scored 5 points against the Dallas Mavericks, hitting a pivitol three pointer at the turning point of the game. His career high in scoring came against the Bucks, scoring 30 points while grabbing a career high 7 defensive rebounds.
On December 14, 2007, Herrmann, along with center Primož Brezec was traded to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for center Nazr Mohammed.[4]
He lost his mother, younger sister and his girlfriend in a car accident in July 2003. Exactly one year later, his father died of a heart attack[5].
