Vysshaya Liga (ice hockey)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vysshaya Liga (Premier League) is the lower division of the Russian Pro Hockey League, a professional ice hockey league in Russia.

The team that wins the Vysshaya Liga is promoted to the Super League if it meets its requirements. Otherwise, the losing finalist is promoted. In both cases the bottom finisher in the Super League is relegated to the Vysshaya Liga. If both winner and losing finalist don't meet the Super League requirements, no promotion or relegation occurs.

The Vysshaya Liga is divided into separate East and West leagues. Teams play against each other four times in the course of a season. Three teams from Kazakhstan participate in the East league, but were not allowed to play in the playoffs. In 2007-08 season, an Ukrainian team, Sokol Kiev, was accepted into the league. In addition, foreign teams are allowed to participate in the play-offs since the 2007-08 season, and thus have a chance to enter the Russian Super League.
