From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vrpolje is a village in the region of Slavonia, Croatia, 10 km south of Đakovo; elevation 90 m. Chief occupations are farming and livestock breeding. Vrpolje is located at the intersection of the main road (M17.01) Slavonski Šamac - Đakovo - Osijek and the regional road, as well as on the railway junction of railroads Zagreb - Slavonski Brod - Vinkovci (part of Paneuropean koridor X) and Beli Manastir - Osijek - Đakovo - Slavonski Šamac (part of Paneuropean Koridor Vc). Also, the motorway A5 is passing nearby.
Vrpolje is visited by numerous tourists and lovers of Meštrović's art. Meštrović was born here because Vrpolje was a temporary residence of his family (his father was involved in the construction of the railroad Đakovo-Šamac); later on the family returned to Otavice near Drniš.
