Vrbovec is north-east from Zagreb, connected:

  • 32 km by highway A4 (Zagreb - Sv.Helena), then expressway D28 (Sv. Helena - Vrbovec) or,
  • 40 km by old state route Zagreb - Dugo Selo - Bjelovar, as by

train on direction Zagreb - Vrbovec - Koprivnica - Hungary.

14.892 inhabitants according the Croatian census from 2001. are living on the administrative territory of Vrbovec. Around 4.200 live in the center of Vrbovec.

City government, court, police, health-service, post office are the part of infrastructure of Vrbovec.

Current mayor is Vladimir Bregović (since 2005), the previous was Zlatko Herček (2001-2005).

Vrbovec was first time mentioned on April 21, 1244. in written documents. The document today is in Archbishop's archive in Zagreb, in serial Privilegialia. It was published by Croatian-Hungarian King Bela III (IV), where feudal field was given to the countman Junk, the son of Izak from Ravno (village), whose right are confirmed from the Koloman (brother of King Bela). The countman Junk was the higher officer at Križevci's county.

A mid-air airplane collision happened near Vrbovec.

The production of meat and products of meat, brick-production, metal working machines are principle productions in Vrbovec.

The most important company is Meat Industry PIK Vrbovec, which is employing 1500 people. As a part of the conglomeration Agrokor, in the last years became very important meat industry in the whole Croatia.

Other companies are: Gradip - industry of bricks, Oprema Vrbovec - industry of transport technology machinery and Society of Private entrepreneurs of Vrbovec.

The basic education, elementary school was found in 1669.y. in Vrbovec. Today Vrbovec has two elementary schools and one high-school.

Vrbovec has got a local small cinema, culture-art society HKUD "Petar Zrinski", library, radio station Vrbovec, people's university of Vrbovec.

Vrbovec is without TV station, theatre (opera) and university. From this reasons naturally is gravitated to Zagreb as a center of these activities.

"Kaj su jeli naši stari" is the main happening in Vrbovec each year. The town-day June 15 is also culture event each year, when is celebrated the day of Saint Vitus, the protector of Vrbovec.

Vrbovecka Udruga Mladih - VUM organisation is very popular between younger population of Vrbovec.
