VOX is a German television channel, headquartered in Cologne and part of the RTL Group, Europe's largest TV, radio, and production company. The channel officially launched at 5 p.m. on January 25, 1993. Prior to that, there have been test runs under the informal name Westschienenkanal (West slot channel, in reference to Nordschienenkanal and Südschienenkanal, which the other two German private channels RTL Television and Sat.1 were informally called in the 1980s).[1] The program consists mainly of documentaries as well as U.S. series and movies.

VOX starts its transmit mode on 25 January 1993. One wanted to establish a television station with unusually high level in Germany. Owners were to kind of sending: UFA (Bertelsmann AG) 24,9%, Westdeutsche Medienbeteiligungsgesellschaft 25,1%, Holtzbrinck-Verlag 14,5%, dctp 11%, Mittelständische Unternehmensbeteiligung 10%, Warner Music Germany 14,5%. The director of program at that time was Ruprecht Eser. One year after the start seems to be the "event television" at the end. The market share in the advertising-relevant target group is with lean 1.5 % - too little for the advertising customers, who hold back themselves therefore with advertising circuits. VOX makes losses of million. Except the UFA belonging to Bertelsmann and dctp all partners step out starting from February 1994. The consequence of the financial crisis: The quality sank further rapidly, VOX partly repeated its movies every few weeks, in order to get the program fully. On April 1st, 1994 VOX goes into the liquidation. More than 250 workers must leave the TV-station. The remaining crew has the order to keep an emergency programme upright. In summer then the large surprise: Rupert Murdoch wants to take part with its News Corporation. In November 1994 VOX has new owners: News German Television Holding (News Corporation) 49,9%, Canal + 24,9%, UFA (Bertelsmann AG) 24,9% and dctp 0,3%. Gradually VOX in the television landscape gains a foothold. 1998 one closes first output deal with the 20th Century Fox. The image changes itself and it apart from magazines and reports also series and features is shown. In December 1999 the RTL Television transfers the business-shares of the News Corporation. Short time later sells canal+ to UFA (Bertelsmann AG). Thereby belonged VOX to 99.7 % RTL Group, 0,3% of the business shares belong further dctp. In the meantime VOX is the most successful television station of the "second generation". With series such as CSI and CSI: Miami one was even so successful, which these are radiated now with RTL Television. CSI: NY reaches market shares up to 21% on VOX. Audience share(March 2008):5.4%,from 14-49 years 7.4%.
