I was born in southeastern Michigan before 1970, lived in Charlotte and Atlanta for several years, and returned to metro Detroit in 1991.
I got my first computer in 1978, a TRS-80 Model I with all of 4K. Since then I've run the gamut, from programming ventures, operating a pirate radio station at Duke, creating WildCat! doors, running two BBSes and a FidoNET node, hosting cranky IRC bots on EFnet and Undernet, scripting a popular IPtables firewall, et cetera.
I've also designed websites, both commercial and personal; my own domain features 50+ pages. I run a Debian-based ProLiant ML350[1] at home (hosting SMTP, HTTP and Tor servers), and broadcast a WiFi hotspot via FON.
I was previously a firefighter in North Carolina, and after moving back to Michigan, I graduated first in my class for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) licensure with a 4.0 GPA. The certification expired due to my close call with death, but I intend to complete the paramedic (EMT-P) course in the future.
I was issued a lifetime Restricted Radiotelephone Operator's Permit by the FCC in 1988 and experiment with various ham radio projects. I've also tried my hand at antenna design. If you're into such things, check out this impressive frequency allocation chart.
