[edit] Plot
Sten is sent on a mission to a middle-east like war zone. Various factions are trying to kill the other factions and all of them hate the Empire. When the Emperor (who is showing signs of instability) assigns a long banished local of the region as ruler of the whole cluster, he proves as big a despot as the Khaquan, the former ruler. While Sten and Alex are collecting evidence to compel the Emperor to rescind his decision, it appears the Emperor is planning to martyr Sten. When leaving the central world of the cluster, Admiral Mason, who happened to be Sten's much hated flight instructor and rival, is ordered by the Emperor to use a planet buster on the capitol world. We leave Sten and his fleet in shock after Sten and a tacship pilot destroy Mason's ship, making Sten and company mutineers, and rebels; declared outlaw by Imperial forces.
