Volvo Driving Soccer Mom
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Volvo-Driving Soccer Mom" is a song by the alternative rock band Everclear, from their album Slow Motion Daydream (2003). The song is about girls who use drugs and have reckless sexual intercourse in high school and college but later grow up to be more conservative "mothers" when they decide it will be to their advantage. The Lyrics allude to the terms V.D. (for Venereal disease) and S&M (for Sado-Masochism, a form of extreme sexual behaviour)
The song was performed by Everclear lead singer Art Alexakis during his solo tour and was made the first single off Slow Motion Daydream.
The video for the song features the story of a blond wild child who grows up to become a Volvo-driving soccer mom just like the song describes. In the video, scenes from her "checkered" past are cut with scenes from her present life as a housewife to highlight the differences between the two.
Although the song was being performed live, it was a work in progress during Art's solo tour. The lyrics were changed several times, and different audiences heard different versions while the song was still in its infancy and not yet recorded. The storyline came to Art as he was winding up his last tour before the break up of his original band.
After meeting a young blond soft core porn performer in Florida who, in her real life was the opposite of her "on-screen" image, Art was moved to turn her story into a song.
In describing the blonde performer whose work could be compared to the likes of Bettie Page, it could easily be said that when her stage lights went down she was a very conservative young lady. At the time that Art met her, she was on her way out of the adult industry and her new career goal was to become a wife and mother. She did not yet own her Volvo, but only wanted to own one.
Although the finished version of the song is a generalization about wild girls growing up and becoming responsible women, the concept is based on a real person.
