“Francis Street Yarraville, with its passing traffic is possibly the unhealthiest and most dangerous street in Australia and has the dubious claim to fame of the highest levels of diesel pollution recorded in any residential street in this country. Even in global terms it appears that Francis St is among the worst streets in the world in terms of pollution and truck traffic...” This is the home of Voltera, a multi-faceted four piece currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. Established in the underground, Voltera is a sophisticated, emotive and distinct manipulator of the darker genres, drawing on their collective musical influences to create an eclectic twist on metal and industrial sounds, within an accurate environmental backdrop.
In an industry dominated by men, the cliché is abandoned with instigator Jess assembling Voltera's diverse talent into a defiant armada against capitalist indulgence. A graduate from the vocally unconventional, Jess' vocal range is rampant and unique, extending from dark and melodic to an ardent guttural bawl, thus delivering a captivating live performance immersed in the avant-garde. Recently Voltera ventured to the USA to play the West Coast leg of the 2006 Vans Warped Tour, followed by shows in Phoenix and Portland. In addition, Voltera have been the support for international acts such as KMFDM, Genitorturers and Covenant, as well as headlining many of their own successful shows all over Australia. Voltera have two tracks featured on popular console games, "It beats for you" on the recently released Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, and "Do What Your Daddy Say" on Tony Hawk's Project 8. With aggressive political intention, Voltera focus much of their artistic energy towards overpopulation, the environment and organized religion. This is evident both lyrically and within the social activities of the band members. It becomes hard to classify something that constantly changes form, with the only formula being purpose.
Excerpt from the Voltera Mission Statement: “Within the steady approach of the end times of the world as we know it, we continue to act somewhat as a virus upon the earth, moving into environments and depleting them of all natural resources like no other species. WE WILL be the cause of some kind of apocalypse by one means or another. The reason that the delicate balance of nature has been so permanently altered is that simply - there are too many of us and our lifestyles are so removed from the ecosystem that we now live in the decay of our natural world.
The issue here is overpopulation. Voltera’s motto is Save the Earth, Kill Yourself.
This is used to shock people into the harsh reality of our situation, not as advice. Sometimes you need to be shocking to gain attention when everyone is so distracted by the artificial reality that we have created for ourselves, where nothing matters except money. We can slow down this impending doom by altering our views about our own existence. Our lives are precious, but not as precious as we may think. Voltera stands for the belief that abortion, contraception and euthanasia should be embraced in many circumstances. Anything that reduces the population will benefit us all and the environment. A problem arises with almost all organized religions, most of which who condemn the above. These institutions encourage over-breeding by over-feeding us guilt. It is the politics founded in white, Christian Capitalism that IS the true “evil” in this world. The Catholic Church is the richest organization in the world – this is not by accident!
We, in the western world deplete not only the natural resources of our own counties but also that of other, poorer countries. Multinational corporations purchase raw materials cheaply in poor societies and transport them to rich societies where factories process them for profitable sale. This in turn, discourages the production of food and goods needed by the local people. Third world debt that is unpayable due to the fact that the interest on the debt exceeds the amount certain countries produce creating debt bondage for poorer countries, which is used as a form of control and oppression by first world countries. Some would have you believe this is natural selection. There is nothing natural about it as we are manipulating nature and working against our overall survival. In actual fact, most of the native or tribal cultures are, or were, more a part of the ecosystem than we ever could be. Those people were never so naive to put trust in technologies that could destroy everything and everyone. The poor get poorer, the rich get richer and the starving go on dying while families in the western world decide whether or not to buy a new flat screen T.V to watch it on.
With all of the above in mind, what are we all rebelling against if it is not this? Voltera believe it is the duty of anyone who sees through the social fabric of lies that we are socialized into, to speak out! Give purpose to their frustration and apathy towards this imposing modern life. It is the band’s intention, through the music of Voltera, to obtain enough influence to establish an organization where the funds are directed towards the environment, those truly in need and where the message is clear: We are the ones to blame for the destruction now, and the total destruction to come. There should be no guilt felt because you have wronged God. Guilt should be felt because you are yet another human who must walk the wrong path, who knows in the truest parts of itself that it has become unnatural to this world. “
