Volkwin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Volkwin (Middle High German: Volkewîn), also known as Folkwin, Volquin, and Wolquin, was the Master (Herrmeister) of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword from 1209 to 1236. Schenk is sometimes appended to his name.

Originally from Naumburg, Folkwin succeeded Wenno von Rohrbach, the first master of the order. Folkwin led the Sword-Brothers in a crusade in Livonia against the Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians. He was killed by Samogitians in the Battle of Saule in 1236. The surviving Sword-Brothers were subsequently merged into the Teutonic Knights and led by Hermann Balk.
