Volgodonsk

Volgodonsk (Russian: Волгодо́нск) is a city in Rostov Oblast, Russia, located on the west bank of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir at 47°31′N 42°9′ECoordinates: 47°31′N 42°9′E. Population: 165,994 (2002 Census); 175,593 (1989 Census); 28,000 (1970). The town grew in size due to the construction of the Volga-Don Canal and Tsimlyansk hydroelectric dam. Volgodonsk received town status in 1956. The town was in international news briefly in 2003 when it held a vodka-drinking contest in which the winner, who ingested 1.5 Liters of vodka, died of alcohol poisoning. Russian prosecutors are currently bringing charges of involuntary manslaughter against the event organizers. [1]
