[edit] Plot summary
The book opens with a flashback of when Cassie last sees her lover Max before he dies just before she tells his that she is pregnant with his child. Then the action begins. Cassie Black, ex-con, is now working selling cars in L.A., when she discovers that her daughter, born and adopted whilst she was in prison, is moving abroad with her foster parents. So she decides on one last big crime to get enough money to start a new life for the pair of them.
Leo Renfro, a friend who she worked with in the past, sets her up with all the information necessary to rob a high-rolling Las Vegas gambler. However, after successfully completing a nail-biting robbery, she discovers that the briefcase she thought would contain $100,000 contains $2.5 million, and that the supposed high-roller was actually a drop-off man for an organized crime syndicate. Vincent Grimaldi, the casino owner, sends Jack Karch, his hit-man, to LA in order to get the money back. Karch kills Renfro in an attempt to find the money, but is unable to catch Black. Frustrated, he kidnaps Black’s daughter and takes her back to Vegas, offering Black a trade - the money for her daughter’s life. Black successfully frees her daughter, and in doing so kills Karch, who turned out to be the man who killed Black’s lover (and father of her child). Now on the run, Black realises that she now cannot take her daughter with her, so returns her to her foster parents, and drives off into the sunset with what's left of the money.
