[edit] Unusual Work Environment

  • A Virtual Company: Although the company maintains an office in Windsor, employees are free to work from home or any other remote location. This provides employees with greater flexibility, and also makes available to VisionWorks a much larger talent pool, i.e., one outside the Windsor area.
  • No Time Clocks: Employees are required to attend one meeting per week. Other than that, they are free to work any hours they choose. VisionWorks places its emphasis on results. As long as work is completed on time and with a high quality, employee time is not regulated.
  • Open Project Policy: Under VisionWorks’ open project policy, employees are free to choose and work on the projects that interest them most.
  • No Secrets: Because of the company’s small size and privately held status, VisionWorks is able to treat every employee as a partner in terms company direction, pending projects and contracts, etc. In other words, there is no barrier of secrecy between management and employees.

[edit] Products [2]

  • Vision Backup: Backup and recovery software designed to work across the entire enterprise, including remote locations.
  • File Access Manager: Software that enables the backup of open, locked and in-use files.
  • Cryptex: 448-bit encryption software for fixed and mobile workstations.

[edit] Development Focus[3]

VisionWorks’ current development efforts are driven by a few key concepts:

  • Continuous Backup Filter Driver (CBFD) Framework. VisionWorks’ framework provides an interface for viewing file system changes and events. Changes can be monitored natively by Windows, but no information is given by Windows to notify the backup application where the change occurred in the file. Likewise a list of the changed locations is not given by Windows to the application that registered for updates. VisionWorks’ framework addresses these concerns via a COM SDK.
  • Multiple Backup Approaches. VisionWorks employs both disk imaging and file-based backups, ensuring that the correct backup technique is used in any situation.
  • Archiving. Archiving implies the ability to store data long-term, as well as the ability to retrieve archived data quickly. VisionWorks devotes considerable resources to this aspect of backup software development.
