[edit] Biography

Vishwasrao (March 2nd 2 nd March 1742 -14th January 1761) was eldest son of Nanasaheb Peshwa was born at Supa (now Joida) near Pune.

Vishwasrao was groomed by his father Nanasaheb Peshwa & Uncle Sadashivrao Bhau well in administrative matters. Vishwasrao was exposed to military warfare training early in his life.

At Chatrapati Shahu’s insistence and the wishes of the late Baji Rao I, Vishwasrao was married to Radhikabai daughter of Sardar Gupte who acted as Tipnis (secretary) for his grandfather Baji Rao I and later his uncle Raghunathrao. Chatrapati Shahu, having a secular outlook in order to broaden the base of his Peshwa administration (and to avoid a stranglehold on the administration by any particular community) fixed Radhikabai’s marriage on Padwa day of 1749 with Vishwasrao eldest son of Nanasaheb Peshwa as one of the preconditions for making the Peshwa post hereditary. Chatrapati Shahu’s confidante Parvatibai had likewise become the wife of Sadashivrao Bhau. Gopikabai had reservations about this match, as Radhikabai was not from the Chitpavan community.

Vishwasrao who was groomed was 1st exposed to actual warfare at Sindhkeda near Hyderabad, against Nizam in 1756.

Vishwasrao was killed at the Third Battle of Panipat and cremated.
