State Route 61 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia, running from State Route 16 in Tazewell east to U.S. Route 460 in Narrows.

[edit] Description

Tazewell County

SR 61 begins at State Route 16 in the North Tazewell part of the town of Tazewell. It heads east alongside the Clinch River, leaving Tazewell just after crossing the U.S. Route 19/U.S. Route 460 bypass. After passing Burkes Garden Station, SR 61 reenters Tazewell at Fourway. It turns south along an old alignment of US 19/460, crossing U.S. Route 19/460 Business, and then turns east at Benbolt and leaves Tazewell.

From Tazewell, SR 61 follows the South Fork Clinch River in a general east-northeasterly direction. The river ends just before Gratton, where the road crosses the Tennessee Valley Divide and meets State Route 623 at an elevation of 2777 feet (846 m). SR 61 then follows Clear Fork past Shawver Mill and Cove Creek.

Bland County

In Bland County, SR 61 continues east-northeasterly next to Clear Fork past the settlement of Clear Fork to Rocky Gap. It crosses Interstate 77 at Rocky Gap, and U.S. Route 52 uses SR 61 to get across I-77. SR 61 then begins to follow Wolf Creek past Round Bottom into Giles County.

Giles County

SR 61 continues alongside Wolf Creek past Day, Phlegar, First Ford, Boxley, Chapel, Penvir, and Shumate. In Narrows, where Wolf Creek empties into the New River, SR 61 crosses State Route 100 at its north end, crosses the New River and U.S. Route 460, and loops back around to the southeast to end at US 460.
