State Route 401, also known as part of Van Dorn Street, is a primary state highway in Alexandria, Virginia, United States. It runs from the south city limits near the Van Dorn Street Metro station northeast to State Route 420 (Seminary Road), generally paralleling Interstate 395 to the east. State Route 613 continues south from the south end of SR 401 past an interchange with the Capital Beltway (Interstate 95/Interstate 495) and through Franconia. From the north end of SR 401, Van Dorn Street continues next to I-395, ending near State Route 7 (King Street).

SR 401 has interchanges with State Route 236 (Duke Street) and with the road into the Van Dorn Street Metro station. Landmark Mall is located at the junction of SR 401 and SR 236.

[edit] History

SR 401 was assigned to its present location, previously unnumbered, in the early 1980s, but it only ran as far north as SR 236. In the mid-1980s, it was extended to its current terminus at SR 420. Its current route was once part of Fairfax County, and the portion of SR 401 from immediately south of Edsall Road to its southern terminus was part of SR 613 until it was annexed by Alexandria in the 1950s.
