Virgin Active

Virgin Active is a chain of health clubs in South Africa, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Initially a South African Company, The Health and Racquet Club, it was at near collapse when it was acquired by Richard Branson's Virgin Group at the personal request of Nelson Mandela. It has subsequently expanded its operations to Italy, Spain and the UK.
On the November 1, 2006 it took over the UK-based operation of the more prestigiuos Holmes Place chain, thus increasing its UK chain of clubs from 24 to 72 overnight.
Recent proposals to expand to Australia and Dubai in 2008 and the USA in 2009 have also been announced.
