Speedies

Hey Steve!

Thanks for volunteering to de-tag non-speedy articles and drop a note to the users who tagged wrongly! Whilst you're doing this awful, thankless task, I don't know if either of these pretend templates are of use to you - I use them (not as often as I should) when clearing out CSD: User:Redvers/Notspeedy for articles were the nominator has given a spurious manual reason to delete like "article not very good" or "article is wrong" or the like; and User:Redvers/Noreasons for articles just tagged with db-meta and no reason given at all. Users you inform will shout at you, by the way!

Usage is

  • {{subst:User:Redvers/Notspeedy|Article title|Spurious reason given by nominator}}~~~~ and
  • {{subst:User:Redvers/Noreasons|Article title}}~~~~

Hope this helps, and I promise to delete a load from CSD when I get a moment in order to say thanks properly!   REDVERS  SЯEVDEЯ  13:22, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks big time - that will save me telling some editors their life story (I hope). Cheers!--VS talk 13:26, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Ediacaran biota/User:Verisimilus/Ediacara merger

Have I done what you wanted me to? I'm a bit confused...

  • Well actually I suggest you blank the page you used as a sandbox User:Verisimilus/Ediacara and then let me know immediately and I will put a different speedy tag on it for you...--VS talk 22:22, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Done.. | Verisimilus 22:28, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
  • I'd been advised by another editor that it would be advantageous to retain the edit history of my sandbox, and attach that to the main article. Is that in fact not the case? Should all the history be lost? If so please feel free to press ahead with deletion.
  • Thanks for clearing that one up! | Verisimilus
  • Just my two cents - I don't see why the sandbox history is important. Only one user contributed to the sandbox. It is not clear to me how many uesers contributed tot he article - there are contributions from an IP address. I would have thought the article history takes precedence. If User:Verisimilus wishes to rewrite the article in his sandbaox and then overwrite the article in main namespace he can do so and make sure there is a clear edit summary to that effect. I don't thihnk the world needs to see the editing process from one contributer only. Thus the proposed deletions and mergers seem excessively elaborate. Regards - not really here --Golden Wattle talk 23:36, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you - I won't respond to you on your talk page - even if it is lovely to see your words. In terms of this issue I must say I agree with you - but I was following the request on Ediacaran biota by another editor who speedy tagged it and not having seen one before I didn't want to disturb the recommendation. I will pass on your thoughts and message to Sarah. C'ya. --VS talk 23:47, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your message, Steve. A history merge is very easy. You just delete the existing article, then move the secondary one to where the article you just deleted was, then delete it as well. Then you go onto the deletion page and all of the edits of both versions of the article are listed together in order of date and time, so you just click to restore all edits. And that's it! It seriously took about one minute of time and so it isn't a big deal if people aren't happy and want something done instead, but I think it is impossible to "unmerge" a merged history so I don't think we'll be able to undo the actual merge. As always I'm available to anyone who needs help implementing whatever you all decide to do, but Ediacaran biota is a very long way outside my area of expertise, so I shall leave the actual decision making up to you guys. Cheers, Sarah 04:11, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the steps Sarah - I'll use them if I get a similar request. Article wasn't in my area of expertise either - this one was just one of the ones I picked up on WP:ANI yesterday and I wanted to bring it to a close.--VS talk 04:32, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Riverina Pictures

Hey - just wanted to say that your photos of the Riverina area are great. If you are ever around there again and are free to take some pictures, I'd love a photo of any CountryLink stopping station - have a look at List of CountryLink train routes for those towns that don't have a railway station picture. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. JRG 03:59, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

  • I will be happy to - I tend to have a camera with me most of the time. Thanks for the compliments regarding my photos.--VS talk 04:32, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Did you know?

Updated DYK query On 12 April 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article forty winks, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Paisley

Heh, you like the paisley? Great :) I had a pretty cool page a few months ago, someone else designed it for me, but I get bored every so often, so... anyway, hi! :) – Riana 06:04, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi back. Well I'm not like intensed by Paisley - but saw you talking to Sarah and have seen your great work around the place and it was a way to say hi (apart from you thinking I must be some seriously weird editor walking around in a paisley shirt and a paisley tie - *which is not the case he hastens to add*)--VS talk 06:07, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
    • Head to toe paisley sounds like an awesome look. I don't think I know anyone who could pull it off, but... – Riana 06:12, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the message

And for the support in my RFA. I'm a bit overwhelmed at the moment with all the messages and it's a good thing because it's the only thing keeping me from blocking or deleting myself. Give me a shout anytime.--Fuhghettaboutit 03:35, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Re:Congratulations

Thank you VS, for the kind words. I could write a book about my life which has been full of adventures. Take care. Tony the Marine 05:57, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Bernadette Young

In respect of CapitalRoadster I haven't reverted the removal of the speedy tag. But the article still doesn't assert notability, it just says what Bernadette's job is. Plenty of non-notable media personalities about, and what's more, given their job the bar should be higher not lower.... I mean it's harder for someone who doesn't work in the media to get sufficient coverage to become a known name.Garrie 09:17, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Agreed - and from my perspective notability and verifiability should go hand in hand. Notability isn't proven until it is asserted through a second, third and fourth reliable external source - else quite frankly anything can be notable. I didn't want to start any sort of edit war but I'm not quite sure how to handle comments like this by an otherwise good editor - short of deleting content on the article that isn't referenced but that would appear churlish to some. --VS talk 12:12, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
I have also left a comment in support of yours and towards Capitalistroadster on the article talk page.--VS talk 14:19, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

WP:Riverina

after the discussion surrounding wikiproject outback australia - or something similar - with goldenwattle I think - I don't really know how I missed this one starting up. BTW. All my brothers, their families, and my parents, live in Wagga. I was there for Easter - it's getting more like a Sydney suburb every time I go there! Garrie 22:34, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

QXZ-Ads

Hi Steve, I may later ask your opinion on the banner for the WP:AUS qxz-ad. Could you also ask everybody you know that would be relavant to this topic (other than Sarah, Longhair, Garrie Irons or Gurch) because the more the merrier. Gee I can't believe I started all this:). Thanks Harrison-HB4026 01:34, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi Steve. Have you got any ideas regarding the banner for the ad? Harrison-HB4026 06:56, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your question - I have responded in some detail at the centralised location. Cheers!--VS talk 07:15, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Check the centralised location. Harrison-HB4026 07:22, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Yep - am doing so - (it's on my watchlist). Suggest you now directly write to others - anyone that's shown some interest (from Australia) and get them to put down their ideas.--VS talk 07:24, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I have left a question on everybodys talk page. Harrison-HB4026 07:27, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the ideas. I think that we should start finalising this so we should start getting the ideas that would really work. Harrison-HB4026 23:53, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
Ha Ha very funny wise guy. Ok, I do believe that your idea with the coo-ee is great but I believe that we should omit the snowball march because that might be a little hard on Gurch to create. One question: Regarding the background should we use a outback style colour or a flag in the background like this? Thanks Harrison-HB4026 02:37, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
  • No I'm not suggesting the "Snowball March" just using that link to refer to the snowballing effect that Coo-ee had on gaining new recruits - ie: Exactly what we are trying to do with these Ads - gain new recruits. In terms of the colours - I think our Green & Gold colours as per WP Australia banner would be best - they are afterall our national colours.--VS talk 02:44, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Sorry, a misunderstanding from me. I will alert Gurch now. Thanks Harrison-HB4026 03:14, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
All done. After all of this happens I might take a Wikibreak so I can do other things. Thanks Harrison-HB4026 03:31, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Judy Morris

Howdy Harrison - we are now co-nominated here for a DYK regarding Judy Morris. I have rewritten the article a bit and managed to find a few photos that should assist. Keep your fingers crossed that you will get your first DYK approval in the next few days.--VS talk 02:59, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Thankyou so much. I can't thank you enough for all of the help that you have given me. You have worked your backside off. I think you deserve this:
The Original Barnstar
For all of the great work and help that you gave User:HB4026 with the Judy Morris article. Thankyou Harrison-HB4026 04:35, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

By the way I am now part of the WP:AUS re-accessing team and I had to rate this as a B class article (I didn't rate it higher because I was a big part in it but I couldn't rate it as a Start or a Stub (they would dispose of it if it was a stub).

  • I very much appreciate and thank you for the barnstar. I agree with the B rating - although I never rate anything I substantially write past a start class on the basis of ethical objectiveness. I'm hoping and looking forward to you receiving a DYK tag. It will be a few days yet but we'll keep our fingers crossed....--VS talk 05:17, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok. I think we can now sign off the Judy Morris discussion. It was great to co-write an article with you. Now to the QXZ-ads discussion. Did you get my note on it? If you didn't check up in the QXZ-ads discussion. Thanks Harrison-HB4026 05:21, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

okay ive added the boxes, tell me if any others have slipped through the net. by the way i stopped in at the national library and they have a book with a map showing every county in NSW and the location of all the parishes within it - pity its not online, would have been useful. Also noticed they list the land district and land boards for every parish too - Im not sure if the districts are still used --Astrokey44 09:39, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

violation on edit page Ang Christou

I have been advised that my editing of page 'ang christou' was a violation. I find this strange as I know Ang and that he did in fact buy into a restaurant business on the Greek island of Mykonos (the gay friendly island of Greece). And that the relationship with his partner did not workout and he moved back to Australia. So I don't see how the edit was a violation. Do you know Ang? I do. Is it the fact that I refer to Mykonos as being gay friendly? Well that statement is also true and the Mykonians are proud of it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by The69Doctor (talkcontribs) 02:37, 16 April 2007 (UTC).

  • I have no problem with what you write on Ang Christou's page - as long as you reference it to alternate reliable third party sources than yourself.--VS talk 02:40, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, chill man...

I understand your concerns and actually share some of them but this isn't the most productive way to make them known. Cheers, Pascal.Tesson 00:14, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your comment. I'm actually not sitting here fuming or anything BUT if to not make this rather obvious point where I have, where would one do so (to get more productivity I mean)? I mean Durin is an admin - shouldn't all of the Wiki community expect better behaviour from him?--VS talk 00:30, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Well I don't know about the rest of the wiki-community but I expect more from him. I've told him so on his talk page (although I'm not sure he listened much) and I'm confident that others will also. Now as I said I'm not concerned about your assessment of his behaviour on that RfA as much as with the way you chose to express it. While you tell me you aren't "sitting there fuming" (and I sure hope you are not) the fact is that's how your comments came off. That's a common problem with Internet communities: we're only reading the text and any nuance sort of gets lost in the translation. Cheers, Pascal.Tesson 01:53, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Tvl Wikiproject

Hi VirtualSteve, could you please add importance scales for Wikiproject Australia and not edit the already assessed Tvl wikiproject tags, they are different things and your edits move the articles into the unassessed category for Tvl Wikiproject. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 05:13, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi WikiTownsvillian - thanks for your message - I wonder if you could give me an example of this because as far as I can tell I am only assessing articles that have no importance notated (Townsville or otherwise graded) - I say this because I am going through the list here (so for example I completed all of the A's yesterday) in other words I am not editing any Townsville article that already has a importance rating - if you can give me an example I will be able to check my edits and know what has happened and what not to do.--VS talk 05:33, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
    • Ahmmm - just looking through now at a new article and trying it out to see what happens - so I can see the problem - WP Townsville has a Townsville-importance= line within WP Australia and when I script through unaccessed Australia articles it removes the Townsville part. Fine okay now that I know when I come across a Wikiproject townsville article I will double script so that something like this occurs.... importance=low|Townsville-importance=Low - that will kill two birds with one stone on some occassions like it did for here Black Weir, Thuringowa and will retain the projects classification also.--VS talk 05:45, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi Virtual Steve, yes you've got it :) The two that it was done on so far were: Talk:1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and Talk:Allied Rock-wallaby‎, I'm a little concerned that Tvl ratings would be different to Australian ratings though, won't be different on the Low importance setting of course, but in the mid to top settings there will be conflicts, eg. Townsville, Queensland is of top importance to Wikiproject Townsville and probably Mid or at best High importance to Wikiproject Australia. Likewise most of the articles on Townsville suburbs will be rated as of mid-importance to Wikiproject Townsville, but would presumably be of low importance to Wikiproject Australia. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 05:53, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to the WikiProject Townsville!!!!! :) WikiTownsvillian 05:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

  • You beat me - thank you.
  • No problems at all - I will bear that in mind (I can understand the difference that might occur in terms of importance for a localised project versus wiki as a whole). I have taken the opportunity of signing up to the project also - hope you will accept me? I assume you live there(?) and I did live for many years in Townsville (wish I was at Magnetic Island now on a little 8 horsepower tinnie diving for muddies in the mango swamp) and then visited back and forth for another 10 years or so and know the place pretty well. If I make an error in judgement in an importance scale I will not be offended in the slightest if you adjust it. Cheers!--VS talk 06:01, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
As an initiation ritual which doesn't involve riding your Harley through flaming hoops, would you be interested in having a crack at the Unassessed articles, as someone with local knowledge and with lots of assessing experience it would be of great assistance to us, and with only 60 articles it probably wouldn't be a huge job for you :) WikiTownsvillian 06:09, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Ha Ha - I love that an initiation ritual at Wiki - that'd keep the vandals away. No problems with your request (but it'll be your shout to get the XXXX stubbies at the Seaview next time I want to go fishing at Kissing Point) - consider the list cleared within a couple or three days.--VS talk 06:14, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good, thanks, and I look forward to you calling in that shout, I'm actually heading over to Maggie on Saturday so will have a drink for you in your absence. WikiTownsvillian 06:25, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

2 to 3 days indeed, the rate you're going you'll have it done in a matter of hours! To talk about the cat issues you should contact Longhair who did all the work for the Townsville Wikiproject categories, I think we should just create a new cat either lists or non-article. Thanks, WikiTownsvillian 07:04, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks - I've done a lot of these so most are pretty straightforward (and I am a speed reader - no sh*t) but had a few difficulties removing the actual WikiProject Townsville page - because we had the template on the first page also - so I have covered that one now. Also the lists pages (list of schools, medical facilities etc) are a bit difficult because they create their own new category. Anyway I have to go in a second but wanted to get a few done and will try to do a few more this evening.--VS talk 07:08, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
That's great, your work to this point and that in the future is hugely appreciated. WikiTownsvillian 07:11, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your work on this, I have a few articles that I would like some feedback comments on so I can work on them a bit more to improve their quality ratings, will go into that over the weekend.

Also could you give me a brief note about your thoughts on Crico's lowering Picnic bay to Mid importance to Tvl Wiki, my initial thoughts were to put all the suburb articles at mid importance except for the main suburbs of Townsville, Thuringowa and Magnetic Island, putting those few suburbs as of high importance to wikiproject Townsville because they are the most likely suburbs to be of interest to an external viewer and probably the suburbs with the most information available for. With Magnetic Island I made both Picnic and Nelly Bays in this category because they are both significant to the island and either could argue that they are the primary village of MI. I completely agree with them all still being rated as of low importance to Wikiproject Australia. WikiTownsvillian 23:44, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I tend to agree with Crico's view on Picnic Bay - and your subsequent view on "general" suburbs being of mid-importance. It seems to me that the views that WP Townsville members have about importance ratings that are different than Wikipedia in general are only valid in relation to the 'internal' view of WP Townsville members -probably as a way of focusing editing time and attention on those articles so that they represent Townsville in the best light. I note for example (and I did not change these in my assessments) that articles on politicians, the Mayor, Ian MacDonald etc which on wiki we would only nominate as Low (or perhaps Mid importance) are far higher on WP Townsville and that they do not seem to follow a specific logic from one article to the next. Hope these thoughts are helpful?--VS talk 03:28, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi VS, I wasn't sure about the politicians being of High or Mid importance, but it was getting to the stage where hardly anything would be rated as of high importance to the wikiproject which wouldn't be a good situation when you really want cats like that to drive the focus of the project. As someone who knows the area would you agree with Townsville City, Thuringowa Central and Nelly Bay being rated one higher rating of importance to the other suburbs (to Tvl Wiki)?
Would you classify more generalist articles such as Media in Townsville, Education in Townsville, Politics in Townsville or Military in Townsville as being what should be of high importance and anything which is specific to one thing in Townsville such as Townsville Hospital or a particular politician as being of mid importance? Just so I can understand the distinction.
..Also can we keep in mind that articles such as Eucalyptus, Brisbane and John Oxley?!?! have been rated as of TOP importance to wikiproject Australia, so by that logic I thought at the time that I was being extremely conservative in my ratings of importance to Wikiproject Townsville. WikiTownsvillian 06:43, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Hey WikiTownsvillian, firstly I would agree with you that the three locations you list are rated one higher than the smaller suburbs as they form the backbone of Townsville and are essential knowledge to the project. From that perspective I think that Brisbane (and indeed all the capital cities are of top importance to the Australia project). I do not think that Eucalyptus and John Oxley are of top importance - and guess this was a slightly exagerated rating at the time by someone - those two are now adjusted (please feel free to let me know of any others of this ilk). In terms of politicians well the local mayor has been around since Noah built the ark and he probably gets top billing because of that and his direct involvement with Townsville but the Federal Pollie is going to be a rating less - say at Mid because he is not so directly involved. Just like you will note that John Howard rates top and Alexander Downer rates high. Finally as far as I am concerned each of these gradings remain transient so any of them can be changed as time progresses depending on the environment within the project - so I suggest you make your rating just like any edit and others will or may come in and adjust if they disagree. It's all good.--VS talk 07:06, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi VS, I would question the following top importance ratings for Wikiproject Australia; Australian Aboriginal mythology, Australian electoral system, Botany Bay, Charles Sturt, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Donald Bradman, George Bass, Indigenous Australian languages, Jervis Bay Territory, List of Australian Opposition Leaders, List of Australian television ratings for 2007, Local government in Australia, Ludwig Leichhardt, Matthew Flinders, Mutiny on the Bounty, Norfolk Island, Philip Parker King, Robert Menzies, William Bligh. Most of these articles might be of top importance to their various sub-wikiprojects and perhaps they have been given this rating by users trying to give articles top importance rating on the sub wikiprojects without understanding how to do it like myself when I started into this. WikiTownsvillian 09:02, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Appreciate you indicating those pages that you are wondering about top importance ratings for. A couple might still be (eg: Don Bradman) but I will try and look at all of them on the weekend to give a second/opinion.--VS talk 10:15, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
