Linux virtual consoles

My GNU/Linux distribution has virtual consoles. How about a disambiguation page?

This Article and information should be merged with "Nintendo Revolution"

I've now created an article about the Linux virtual consoles at Virtual console and added a disambiguation link in both directions, plus a main article link at Nintendo Revolution#Virtual Console. --TuukkaH 12:33, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
I think this page is entirely unnecessary and everything's already mentioned in the Revolution article. Maybe we should nominate this for deletion. -TonicBH 14:57, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

How many people will be looking for the Linux thing? I never heard about that other virtual console before now and I think most people looking for Virtual Console would be looking for the Wii version. TJ Spyke 01:51, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

If we are to keep the article about Nintendo's Virtual Console separate from Nintendo Revolution, we can call it Virtual Console, "Nintendo Virtual Console", "Virtual Console (Wii)" etc. This is about a specific product and trademark of a company. The other article is about a generic concept in computing, virtual consoles, and can be called Virtual console, Virtual console (computing) etc. These names don't even overlap in the strict sense, so we don't need a disambiguation. Of course as the difference can be as small as just the capitalization, it's good to have a disambiguation note at the top of the pages. Another reason why we don't need disambiguation page is that there are just two articles that can point to each other directly. --TuukkaH 16:46, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Sources

Given the number of false game lists floating around, anyone care to source where this one came from? 24.77.135.3 22:12, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

http://revolution.ign.com/articles/680/680846p1.html This article has a lot of information. It also includes several more games. However, it only says that those games are "likely", and with the article coming from January, it might now be out of date. Still, it came from an official survey. 131.230.185.23 16:21, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

How many games?

Are they going to have pretty much all nes, snes and n64 games? Will I be able to play River City Ransom, Castlevania II, and Sqaure games, or will it mostly just be a few Sega and Nintendo games? If its only 25% of all the games for those consoles then I won't like it. Having 80% or something would make me buy a Wii immediately at launch --Havermayer 02:19, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

If you're asking if it is actually in the magazine, it looks like it, judging from the discussions on some Internet forums. If you're asking if it's credible, it's hard to say. I'm a little skeptical, myself. Dancter 16:22, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Translaters

I've seen on a few pages on Wikipedia (mostly regarding Fire Emblem games) that Nintendo is hiring translators for Japan Only games to be released on VC. Can anyone confirm this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.126.137.209 (talkcontribs)

I haven't read anything like that, so it's just a rumor. Also, please sign your comments in the future. TJ Spyke 20:15, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Move

I have request that the page current at Virtual console be moved and to make it a disambiguation page since I think alot of people looking for Virtual Console now will be wanting info on this one. You can vote at Talk:Virtual console. TJ Spyke 20:17, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

why I put new games on list and where did I get by source

I put these new games on the list because I went to IGN.com and foung a list of games for the Virtual Console. That is why I added a bunch of new games to the Virtual Console list. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hjkgk (talkcontribs) 01:18, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for finally responding to requests for discussion. Now we're making progress. Could you provide some links to these IGN pages so we can verify that these games are confirmed for the Virtual Console? Dancter 01:35, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Where I got my source?

This is the source that I found all of the games I put on the list. http://revolution.ign.com/articles/680/680846p1.html

Quite an old article, however. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ 19:51, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Credible Sources

Some of the games (Citing link 11) have been taken from the Play-Nintendo article, and it doesn't strike me as the kind of site that would get this exclusive. Either they need to be seperated out from the confirmed list and thrown onto a grain-of-salt list, so to speak, or removed from the article until confirmation is issued. A "Trustworthy Source" from a relatively unknown site that appears to be an amateur rather than professional reporting site leads me to believe that it probably isn't credible enough to be featured in the article. Gaz 15:21, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

It's sorted now, I think until confirmation arrives that segregating the potential list is a good thing to do. Good job. Gaz 09:00, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Reference #13

That needs to be fixed. FullMetal Falcon 23:25, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

The entire list of "confirmed games" needs to be completely overhauled. Games like "Hey You! Pikachu!" are in no way confirmed for the virtual console. Additionally, sources apparently confirming games like Donkey Kong Country are completely bogus. This is not acceptable. Maybe we should revert back to a list containing only games seen in official videos and screenshots, like Link to the Past and R-Type. This would GUARANTEE factual accuracy and discourage fanboy pipedreams and false evidence, such as the ESRB list containing multiple Genesis titles, which has since dissappeared. Additionally, Nintendo has confirmed that only thirty games will be availible for download on launch, and the list that has been concocted on this article greatly surpasses this number. Bogus. thealexfish 08:18, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Not only that, but such lists shouldn't hog the article space. Maybe a list of confirmed /launch/ games is fine for the article now (just because there are 30 launch games doesn't mean that more can't be confirmed for eventual download), but later on it should be broken off into its own page. There also the issue of that Brian guy mucking up the history with edits over and over... ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ 11:47, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
What's really bad is that all of those "confirmed" games are not confirmed by that video. The only ones I see/hear mentioned in that video at all are The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, and Donkey Kong. I will now remove all entries with cite 13 besides those four. --HeroicJay 08:40, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
This page has become a mess. How is a page at IGN confirmation Metroid will be available? Or speculation that games rated by the OFLC (or whatever it's called) confirmation? Either these games should be removed or REAL sources should be found (i.e. Nintendo saying Metroid will be available, not an IGN page whos sole content is "A downloadable version of the classic NES game, provided through Nintendo's Virtual Console service", which is NOT confirmation). TJ Spyke 06:42, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

question

Do you have to be online to download games?GrimRepr39 20:14, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you need an internet connection to download the game, but afterwards it is stored in the memory card, so you can play it while offline. -- ReyBrujo 20:38, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Game Saves

I have a question. If you delete a game then redownload it, does you're game saves stay on the game, or are they wiped out? Toasty! | Available at your local store 04:34, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

AFAIK game saves are not uploaded to a remote Nintendo server, so... no. User:oly 02:25, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Er, that doesn't mean the saves couldn't be stored locally. When you sell a disc game, your memory card save doesn't magically disappear... ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ 03:15, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
The way I see this, when you buy the game, it is stored on your memory card as a "block". Then your game saves are stored on a seperate "block". If you delete the game, your save block is still there. If you format your Wii's memory or delete your save, THEN you will lose your save block. —Shanesan (contribs) (Talk) 00:37, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Some games create seperate save files from my understanding, these can be placed onto an SD card, however the games themselves cannot. The games are stored on the internal memory (as are game saves by default). So seperate memory blocks. 24.247.176.252 05:04, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

Controller

If there is some official answer to the question, "Can the Game Cube controller be used for the Virtual Console, avoiding the need to buy the Classic Controller extension to the Wiimote?" it would probably make a useful addition to this article. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.184.146.67 (talk • contribs) .

It's an excellent question, and one I'd love to know the answer to. Nintendo will want to sell Classic Controllers, so the VC software may be programmed not to accept GC controller input. That would be astonishingly mean though, and I'd guess that the GC controller will work, but that the one-size-fit-all design of the Classic Controller will make it easier to use; I don't know how you'd intuitively map SNES controls to a GC pad, for example. Kelvingreen 17:37, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, then again, the Wii may let you map controls for the GC controller. Unrelated: how much does the classic controller cost anyways? --Plainnym 15:20, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
I just found this in the article,
"Lastly, the Gamecube controller can be used for all games."
So yes it can! --Plainnym 15:25, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Assuming "all games" includes Virtual Console games too. We'll see soon enough anyway. Kelvingreen 23:29, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Gamecube controller cannot be used for them all. I purchased F-Zero and it says I must have the Classic Controller. --Riskbreaker87 23:49, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Nevermind. I got it to work. Sorry if I confused someone so just disregard my previous statement.--Riskbreaker87 03:16, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I'd try for yourself. I recall reading somewhere (GameSpot?) that while SM64 reported compatibility only with the Classic Controller, that it worked with the GC pad anyway. Eusis 00:49, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

saturn!!!??!!???

Sega Dreamcast?

I highly doubt this. The graph is not made accordingly, and I believe they said that Dreamcast games have too much data to store on VC. Linktriforce007 14:39, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. I believe it is time this article have some restrictions over who can edit it before this gets too out of hand, like how the article on Wii itself is protected. Just a suggestion. ::Cubedcinder128 01:15, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Thats what I was hoping for as well. Linktriforce007 14:38, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Zelda II?

Looking at the discussion page, I can see there's some disagreement over confirmed VC titles, so I doubt there's any info on this, but has anyone heard anything about Zelda II being made available? Kelvingreen 17:31, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Reason for removal

A suppliment in the December 2006 issue of Edge states that the Virtual Console's "retro" lineup will only include those titles previously released in the region in question. For example, the SNES title Chrono Trigger could be made available on the Japanese and North American versions of the service, but not the service for Europe, as the title was never released there.

Removed last edit, when a few minor changes were also made which I don't contest. Obviously there are reasons why it might be worth removing it but with and empty Edit Summary I'm kind of obliged to ask. Sockatume 23:04, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

It looks to me like the person reverted back to the old state it was in before the person reformatted the game list to all one line (and making the article needlessly large). It had the unfortunate consequence of removing that line. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ 23:39, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Ah, right, I wasn't sure whether it was a revert or a straight edit from the Edit History. I'm going to leave it out until confirmation anyway, on second thoughts. Sockatume 22:34, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Confirmed Games (Wii and Virtual Console)

Today, it seems that Nintendo has announced a finalized list of games (32 to count) as well as the final list of Virtual Console games (30 to count) to be out by five weeks after the console's launch. It also lists the Virtual Console official price for games. You pretty much know the Wii list, so just look at the link provided to check. And the Virtual Console games:

NES: Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Ice Hockey, Pinball, Soccer, Tennis, Urban Champion, Wario’s Woods, Baseball, Solomon’s Key

SNES: F-Zero, SimCity

N64: Super Mario 64

Sega Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Columns, Ecco the Dolphin, Gunstar Heroes, Space Harrier II, Toe Jam & Earl, Ristar, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

TurboGrafx16: Bonk’s Adventure, Super Star Soldier, Victory Run, Bomberman ’93, Dungeon Explorer

Here's the proof: [3]. This info on nintendo.com has been released today (10/31), so it's not old news, and it's official. Hope this helps expand the article. :) (NOTE: This was also posted at the Wii talk page, and was requested to be put here as well.) Darknut Slayer 04:26, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Try before you Buy?

Will there be demos of the virtual consoles available to play before you buy it? Toasty! | Available at your local store 22:59, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

No but seriously, I don't think so. Arkhiver 03:03, 4 November 2006 (UTC) (both this and the above comment about BitTorrent were by Arkhiver)

No Commodore 64 games

I talked to a member of Nintendo, who said that there are no deals made yet for Commodore 64 games. I don't want to change it without agreement, but unless anyone has OFFICIAL word of Commodore 64 deals, the information should be deleted. And the current source is not official.

release table is wonky?

Is there a reason why the table of releases is staggered like that? And would it be helpful to link the game titles to their wikipedia pages? Kelvingreen 13:37, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

I've fixed the table - it had just been constructed incorrectly. And yes, it would be good to link to the game pages. I don't have time now, but I can do it later if nobody gets to it first. Koweja 13:58, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
I've got a bit of time, so I'll get started. I didn't want to start without checking first. Kelvingreen 14:25, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
The table could still do with some re-ordering and tidying, but all the links (the ones that existed, anyway) are in. I wasn't sure about Bomberman '93 (the Mega Drive port was Bomberman '94, so that's linked), so I just linked to Super Bomberman, which came out in 1993. Also, some links, like Space Harrier II and Adventure Island, currently go to franchise pages rather than individual game pages, as those individual pages don't yet exist (Adventure Island), or are included in the main franchise page (Space Harrier II). Kelvingreen 15:44, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Nintendo removed VC lineup

FYI, Nintendo deleted the newspost with the VC info. We need to edit the page to reflect that, as the source is now gone....Unsigned user.

Launch Table

The new look launch table needs some cleanup. A number of the links are badly constructed [[Baseball_%28Nintendo_game%29|Baseball]] instead of [[Baseball (Nintendo game)|Baseball]]. Not to mention that since the section has been changed it no longer lists games by original console.--- bd Sup? - Where we goin'? 17:45, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

The untidy links are my fault, as I just copy and pasted most of them. As for your other point, I'm not sure the games were ever listed by original console, were they? I certainly didn't change the order of the games. Kelvingreen 18:02, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

JQF's edits now make it look 10x better than before. ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ 19:23, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

That was incredibly fast. Good show. - They were last listed by original console as recently as Wednesday.--- bd Sup? - Where we goin'? 19:48, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh yes that's much better, and it'll be much easier to update too. Good work! (although The Legend of Zelda should be listed under L rather than T, shouldn't it?) Kelvingreen 20:44, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
You are right, titles that start with "The" are listed by the next word. So The Legend of Zelda would be listed under L. TJ Spyke 05:12, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Someone needs to watch the USA table. Someone keeps editing it, and inserting games that will not be available (like DKC).

I've been watching this article for a while, and it's really gotten a lot of bad edits (I shall assume good faith and not say any more than that). I imagine once the damn thing is finally out it'll calm down a little, as they'll be tangible facts, but who knows. It might be interesting to note that Wii is the 10th most edited article ever, and second highest after RuneScape of all things (see here if you're curious). ♫ Melodia Chaconne ♫ 15:35, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

I think we should include ALL virtual console games, bolding the launch window ones, and italizing the disputed ones.Chwoka

And I think we should only add those that have been confirmed, and later, that have been released. Kelvingreen 09:37, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

This page needs to be renamed

This page should be moved to Virtual Console; as it stands, "Virtual Console" redirects to Virtual console. The articles are differentiated by the case of the letter c. Furthermore, if the article remains with the title "Virtual Console (Wii)," the other article template at the top of the page is not necessary. Of course, if the page is moved to "Virtual Console" as it should be, then the other article template would be necessary. --Tristam 23:08, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Check the talk page of Virtual console. I request a move and it was shot down. I personally never even heard of that other Virtual Console until I went to see what the Wikipedia page for the VC looked like. TJ Spyke 23:20, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
When there is a one-letter difference (and a uppercase, by all means), the redirection is valid. See Wikipedia:Redirect, the Other capitalisations, to ensure that "Go" to a mixed-capitalisation article title is case-insensitive section. The current way is the correct one. -- ReyBrujo 23:53, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
I was unaware. If that's the case, the "other article" template is unnecessary. Nobody that searches for "Virtual Console (Wii)" will be surprised that they arrived at the Wii's download service. --Tristam 01:32, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
This article has no Virtual Console disambiguation, from what I see. However, the disambiguation at Virtual console is correct, because someone looking for "Virtual Console" may want to come here instead. -- ReyBrujo 01:39, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Oops, sorry, did not notice you had already removed it :-) -- ReyBrujo 01:42, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Rey: I completely agree with the disambig template at the top of the Virtual console article. :) --Tristam 03:03, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
