[edit] What is a Hokie.
The traditional explanation for what is a hokie is incorrect. The story given by the author of the cheer that he invented the word is wrong. The word existed in print years before he wrote the cheer for the contest. He was very old when he was ask, and he must have forgotten the use of the word prior to his cheer.
The nickname Hokie was associated to VA Tech by its rival fans much like Notre Dame, Perdue, and several other colleges. The word comes from the High German word Hoche (now hoch) meaning "High", as in the Most High God. It was used mockingly toward the strong religious believes of the students of VA Tech and residents of the Great Valley of VA where Tech is located, and from where the students came. This was known by a student at UVA in the 1960s. The word hoche was used with similar meaning in Saxon England in the Middle Ages. More research can document this position.
